SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to support our Midwest-Northeast region. We are known for our expertise in erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater management design, and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for oil and gas and renewable projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil site design, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and project management. They will possess a proven track record of leading engineering projects, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to business development efforts. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including CAD designers, GIS analysts, environmental biologists, regulatory agencies, municipalities, and clients, is essential to success in this role.
Potential Positions Available under this Requisition:
- Senior Civil Engineer: Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of experience, including at least 5 years managing engineering projects.
- Principal Civil Engineer: Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of experience, including at least 7 years managing engineering projects.
This is a full-time role with benefits, offering flexible hybrid/remote work arrangements in Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maine, Ohio, and West Virginia.
What you will accomplish:- Lead engineering design processes and oversee the creation of accurate construction drawings, ensuring all project specifications and regulatory standards are met.
- Support regional SWCA offices by addressing engineering needs and collaborating with teams to develop solutions tailored to specific local contexts.
- Work closely with engineering teams across SWCA offices to balance workloads, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.
- Conduct in-depth technical reviews of project deliverables to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with established quality standards, actively contributing to Quality Control and Quality Assurance initiatives.
- Excel in fast-paced environments by managing multiple tasks, collaborating with project managers, and adapting to changing project needs while meeting tight deadlines and maintaining high standards.
- Drives compliance of safety policies and reporting requirements to ensure overall team safety.
- Identify and pursue business growth opportunities by fostering strong relationships with current and prospective clients. Engage in professional networking and collaborate with other SWCA offices to identify new prospects and maintain a strong market presence.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive civil engineering experience, with an emphasis on infrastructure projects.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Project Management.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License in Pennsylvania, or eligibility to obtain one via reciprocity, demonstrating a solid understanding of state-specific regulations.
- Flexibility to travel, including short-term overnight stays, for various project sites and client meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
- 12+ years of civil engineering experience with a focus on civil/stormwater design, showcasing advanced technical skills and industry knowledge.
- Additional PE License(s) in neighboring states of Pennsylvania, reflecting a broad regulatory understanding and ability to navigate diverse landscapes.
- Experience in developing proposals, driving business development initiatives, and managing client relationships, supported by strong communication and negotiation skills to foster and maintain client engagement for sustained business growth.

An employee in this Portland, ME based position can expect a salary of $112,320.00 to $164,320.00/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
