About the Job
One of our client's is looking for a Principal Architect. We're looking for someone who serves as the technical authority on large-scale software builds and data strategies. Develops robust architectural blueprints and ensures implementation adheres to best practices for performance, scalability, and security. Bridges the gap between client needs and technical execution leading the charge in a collaborative process to build a plan & roadmap for executable development in the following phase.
This is an 8-10 week engagement, 20hrs/week with potential for extension during subsequent phases.
Principal Architect Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary technical authority on the project, overseeing architectural decisions and ensuring alignment with business goals
- Lead the technical discovery process, identifying integration points, dependencies, and technical risks
- Define the architecture for a headless ecommerce platform, including CMS, APIs, E integrations, and data pipelines
- Design a modular, scalable system capable of supporting global ecommerce operations, including multi-region and multi-currency requirements
- Define integrations with regional ERP systems, inventory management, payment gateway marketing automation platforms, and analytics tools
- Ensure API-first design principles and maintain efficient, secure, and reliable data between systems
- Partner with project stakeholders (internal and external) to break down deliverables into phases and milestones, focusing on iterative value delivery (e.g. initial MVP)
- Build and prioritize a development backlog, and work with the team to develop detailed user stories and acceptance criteria
- Work closely with UX/UI designers and Product/Project Managers to ensure technical feasibility of design concepts and prototypes
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to refine MVP requirements and ensure busine objectives are met
- Act as the liaison between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into understandable insights and plans
- Define standards for code quality, system reliability, and performance metric
- Establish a framework for scalability and maintainability, including CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools, and version control systems
Principal Architect Requirements:
- 8+ years of experience in software development and technical leadership roles, with a focus on ecommerce and system integration
- Proven success in delivering large-scale ecommerce projects with headless architectures (BigCommerce headless experience is a plus)
- Experience with ERP integrations (Microsoft Dynamics 365 experience a plus), API design, and managing data flows across complex ecosystem
- Hands-on experience with modern ecommerce platforms (e.g., Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Magento), headless CMS platforms, and cloud-based architectures (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Strong expertise in modern web programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, or Java
- Proficiency in modern frontend and backend frameworks (React, Node.js, etc.) a microservices architecture
- In-depth knowledge of API-first development, REST, and GraphQ
- Experience with DevOps tools and practices
- Familiarity with data governance, compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), and data strategy best practices
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and guide technical teams
- Effective communication skills to bridge the gap between technical and non-technic stakeholders
- Experience with global ecommerce implementations, including multi-language, multi-currency, and regional compliance requirements
- Knowledge of AI/ML applications in ecommerce, such as personalization engines or predictive analytics
- Background in Martech tools integration, including CRM, email marketing, and analytics platforms
