Incumbent performs all tasks necessary to register patients, obtain necessary authorizations, verify the patient has a source of funding to cover services, and schedule patients for surgery. Responds to patient inquiries and resolves any identified issues.
Essential Job Functions:

- Reviews patient's financial status to determine necessary payments and makes appropriate financial or payment arrangements. Counsels patients regarding insurance and eligibility 0%
- Reviews cases to determine proper handling and follow-up 0%
- Responds effectively to questions and concerns expressed by patients and other staff and resolves identified problems (registration, eligibility, billing or financial) in a timely manner 0%
- Registers patients as appropriate based on type of admission, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the information 0%
- Performs basic reception functions to ensure smooth office operations, including answering incoming calls, maintaining an accurage filing system, copying forms and documents, etc. 0%
- Ensures accurate authorization process by consistently completing authorizations from CCS, MSI, MediCal, medical groups other than UC Irvine 0%
- Effectively uses computer programs to obtain demographic information and register patients, accurately verifies insurance coverage, including Medical Group eligibility 0%
- Effectively educates clinical staff, physicians and team members about authorization process as appropriate 0%
- Effectively communicates with patients & physicians to assure continuity of care 0%
- Assures that all necessary consent forms are signed by patient/legal guardian and provides copies of forms to other personnel as necessary 0%
- Appropriately schedules, reschedules, cancels or confirms patient appointments in a timely manner to maximize scheduling for patient volume and in accordance with established authorizations 0%
- Appropriately provides patients with written and verbal instructions of physician‘s orders and requirements for pre-operative diagnostic -testing and/or follow up appointments 0%
- Appropriately determines patient eligibility in relation to established program, insurance or contract standards. Effectively counsels patients regarding insurance and eligibility 0%
- Acts as Data Steward by following appropriate procedures regarding requests, access and disclosure of PHI in accordance with HIPAA regulations, and takes necessary precautions to prevent unauthorized access 0%
- Accurately prepares reports (volume and tracking) as needed or requested 0%
- Accurately collects and inputs patient information into computer system 0%
- Accepts and processes cash payments according to established guidelines 0%

Required Qualifications:
- Previous experience with computer registration and registration scheduling system
- Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
- Must demonstrate general understanding of medical terminology
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
- Must be able to travel to off site physician practices
- Minimum one (1) year recent experience (within past two (2) years) registering patients in a hospital or clinic, working as a Medical Assistant, or working in medical billing
- General knowledge of ICD9 and CPT codes
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Demonstrated experience using MS Office
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
- Ability to interpret and understand various medical insurance plans and make accurate determinations regarding coverage
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
- Familiarity of Joint Commission standards
- Experience with Epic
- Demonstrated experience with authorization process and surgical scheduling
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
