DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and evaluate outpatients preoperatively in an efficient and caring manner to provide for a smooth patient flow throughout their experience. Collects, assesses, and analyzes patient data using nursing diagnoses to develop plan of care.
- Responsible for obtaining appropriate lab specimens, performing and interpreting EKGs, and IV access according to perioperative requirements.
- Maintains knowledge of equipment and stays abreast of current perioperative nursing trends.
- Review outpatient charts immediately preoperatively to ensure completeness, including completion of all preoperative consents.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, families and other health care team members.
- Conduct pre-surgical assessment.
- Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and psychological aspects of that environment.
- Provides airway management.
- Ongoing physiological assessment through all phases of the surgical experience, including medication and pain management.
- Participates in the performance improvement process. Assists with regulatory compliance throughout the organization.
- Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications.
- Adheres to all Joint Commission Ambulatory Standards and CMS Rules and Regulations.
- Other duties as assigned by respective Nurse Manager, including staff cross training.
- Participate in maintenance of unit resource materials.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- R.N. with license to practice in State of Iowa.
- Mandatory reporting course within previous 5 years.
- IV skills.
- Knowledge of perioperative services and patient education.
- Maintains BLS certification.
- Maintains ACLS certification, or obtains within 6 months of hire.
- ARD RN - PALS certification strongly encouraged but not required.
