As part of Knowledge Management and Innovation, the Research Services Department serves Troutman Pepper's research and information retrieval needs by leveraging state-of-the-art research technologies to deliver valuable insight, information, and support. The Practice Department Research Liaison will provide expert level resource and research support to attorneys and staff in assigned practice groups. The Practice Department Research Liaison will have subject matter expertise in one or more of these practice areas: Financial Services, Bankruptcy, Real Estate, or Construction. The Liaison will serve as a bridge connecting practice groups with resources that facilitate innovative solutions leading to desired business outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary Subject Matter Expert on designated content areas, providing in-depth knowledge and support to practice groups, firm administrative departments, and the Knowledge Management and Innovation team.
- Collaborate with practice management, practice group leadership, Knowledge Solutions, Innovation, Firm Intelligence, and other firm administrative departments to assess and understand research and information needs.
- Develop and organize comprehensive training curricula and materials tailored to the needs of assigned practice groups, ensuring attorneys and staff develop awareness and proficiency in using appropriate resources.
- Facilitate consistent onboarding process for new attorney hires, ensuring they are well-integrated and informed about relevant resources and procedures.
- Consult with attorneys and staff in assigned practice groups to understand their resource needs and offer recommendations for increased research effectiveness and efficiency.
- Contribute content area knowledge and participate in the development of innovative workflow solutions for assigned practice groups.
- Review, analyze, and summarize data on resource usage, providing insights and recommendations based on findings.
- Evaluate resources and make informed recommendations regarding their acquisition, renewal, or cancellation.
- Facilitate trials of new research resources, evaluating their potential value and applicability to assigned practice groups.
- Facilitate successful implementation of new or enhanced research resources.
- Remain current on technological enhancements that contribute toward providing sophisticated research services in assigned content areas, providing relevant updates to practice groups, firm administrative departments, and the Knowledge Management and Innovation team.
- Assist in the development of customized research tools and solutions to provide a high level of service to assigned practice groups.
- Review and assess research requests received from assigned practice groups to identify training, outreach, and innovation opportunities.
- Maintain regular office hours to offer support and address inquiries from attorneys and staff.
- Communicate updates and developments from assigned practice groups to the Knowledge Management and Innovation team, ensuring alignment and coordination.
- Provide backup support to the research team during high-demand periods or staff absences.
- Work occasionally may require after hours and weekend coverage to perform the essential duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Advanced expertise with major legal research platforms including Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, VitalLaw, Lex Machina, CourtLink, Docket Alarm, Courthouse News, Manzama, etc.
- Expert knowledge of practice-specific content materials for Financial Services, Bankruptcy, Real Estate, and Construction.
- Knowledge and experience with generative AI solutions, both general and legal research related, and willingness to participate in the development of GenAI use cases for assigned practice groups.
- Solid understanding of workflow within Practice Departments.
- Advanced communication and presentation skills, with proven ability to organize content, effectively use technology, and field Q&As.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate across all departments and practice areas to recommend custom solutions that add value to end users and clients.
- Experience with Quest (Request Management System) or similar system.
- Experience with Research Monitor or similar system.
- Exceptional organizational, problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders to achieve common goals and foster a positive team environment.
- Positive approach to team collaboration and goodwill ambassador for the Knowledge Management and Innovation department when working with attorneys, practice groups and other firm administrative departments.
- Solid organizational, analytical and communication skills, with the ability to multitask and re-prioritize as necessary to meet competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education through conference and webinar attendance and participation in local and national associations.
- Substantive knowledge of the law and legal bibliography.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications.
Education and/or Experience:
- MLIS required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a law firm environment
- Minimum of five (5) years of legal research experience, with advanced working knowledge of Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law, VitalLaw, Octus (formerly Reorg), CreditSights, Deal Point Data.
- Subject matter expertise in one or more of these practice areas: Financial Services, Bankruptcy, Real Estate, Construction.
- Well-versed in current research methodologies and resources.
