Job Description:
We are seeking a motivated Corrosion Scientist to contribute expertise in materials science and electrochemical processes critical to the design and operation of our carbon nanotube synthesis systems. You will lead efforts to evaluate, prevent, and mitigate corrosion in high-temperature and reactive chemical environments, ensuring the durability and efficiency of our technology.
Key Responsibilities:
Corrosion Research & Development:
- Investigate corrosion mechanisms in high-temperature and electrochemical environments, particularly those involving molten carbonate-based salts and reactive intermediates.
- Design and conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate corrosion resistance of candidate materials, coatings, and system components.
Material Selection & Testing:
- Recommend materials (metals, alloys, ceramics, and composites) and coatings suitable for prolonged exposure to corrosive environments.
- Perform electrochemical accelerated corrosion tests and develop models to predict material performance over time.
System Design Support:
- Collaborate with scientist and engineers to optimize system design for corrosion mitigation and operational longevity.
- Provide input on the development of prototype reactors and industrial-scale systems.
Data Analysis & Reporting:
- Analyze corrosion data to determine failure mechanisms and improve system reliability.
- Document findings and present recommendations to internal teams and stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement:
- Develop and implement innovative corrosion prevention strategies.
- Stay up-to-date with advancements in corrosion science, materials, and coating technologies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with materials scientists, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineers, and technicians to achieve project goals.
- Contribute to troubleshooting and problem-solving for technical challenges during scale-up.
Desired Knowledge:
Expertise in High-Temperature Corrosion: In-depth knowledge of electrochemical corrosion mechanisms, particularly at elevated temperatures, including oxidation, reduction, chemical and electrochemical materials phenomena.
Electrochemical Techniques: Proficiency in electrochemical testing methods such as potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronoamperometry.
Material Science Fundamentals: Strong understanding of metallurgical and ceramic materials, coatings, and surface treatments used for corrosion resistance in high-temperature environments.
Data Analysis & Modeling: Experience with analyzing corrosion data and applying computational tools to model corrosion behavior and predict material performance.
Hands-On Laboratory Experience: Skilled in designing and conducting experiments, including the operation of high-temperature furnaces, corrosion cells, and characterization equipment (e.g., SEM, EDS, optical microscopy, ICP-OES).
Knowledge of Industry Standards: Familiarity with industry-specific corrosion testing standards (e.g., ASTM, NACE, ISO) and the ability to develop protocols tailored to specific applications.
Problem-Solving & Innovation: Proven ability to diagnose corrosion issues, identify root causes, and propose innovative solutions or material designs to mitigate corrosion.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Effective at working within multidisciplinary teams, including materials scientists, chemical engineers, and mechanical engineers.
Technical Communication: Ability to clearly document and communicate technical findings through reports, presentations, and publications.
Project Management Skills: Experience managing or contributing to research projects, meeting deadlines, and maintaining high-quality deliverables.
Qualifications:
Education: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a related field.
