Organization Overview:Research in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, led by Dr. Nathaniel Heintz, aims to identify the genes, circuits, cells, macromolecular assemblies, and individual molecules that contribute to the function of the mammalian brain and to its dysfunction in disease. Understanding the distinct classes of neurons and the circuits that control specific aspects of cognition and behavior can lead to more targeted treatments for central nervous system disorders.Position Summary :The Laboratory of Molecular Biology at The Rockefeller University is seeking a highly motivated and outstanding candidate for an exciting postdoctoral position to study the selective vulnerability and degeneration of upper motor neurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS presents a paradox in that most known disease-causing mutations are ubiquitously expressed, yet only discrete populations of cells degenerate. We therefore use a multidisciplinary approach, centered on advanced molecular profiling methods to elucidate cell type-specific phenotypes during disease progression in preclinical mouse models and postmortem human tissue. By contrasting vulnerable and resilient neuronal populations as well as non-neuronal cells, we hope to identify novel disease mechanisms and putative entry points for therapeutic intervention. These studies are integrated with modern anatomical and circuit-tracing methods and bioenergetics to map the identity, connectivity, and function of neuronal cell types in cortical and motor circuits.Position Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include:

• Isolate and profile RNA from human and mouse tissue using FANS, TRAP, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and other molecular methods
• Purify and profile cell type specific mitochondria from preclinical models
• Perform multi-omics analysis of sequencing and proteomics data sets
• Perform anatomical analyses using ISH, IHC, viral tracing, functional mapping

Position Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in neuroscience or a related field and have prior research experience in molecular or cellular biology. Preference will be given to those with familiarity with at least one of the following: next generation sequencing, quantitative analysis of sequencing data, animal models of CNS disorders, neuroanatomy and immunohistological methods, and/or functional circuit-mapping. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong track record of research productivity, scientific rigor, excellent communication skills, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
