Job Description
This is an entry-level position without police authority or powers until completion of training and certification received. Upon successful testing and completion of all requirements, candidates will be placed on an eligibility list for entrance into the Police Academy. This position will be open until filled.
- Entry Level Police Officers will have a probationary period of 2 years.
- Successful candidates will undergo 6 continuous months of paid training at a Maryland Police Academy.
- Entry Level starting salary will be $62,026
- Upon graduation from the Police Academy and one year of employment, salary will be $63,886
Candidates must successfully complete the required training and probationary period and must pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, physical examination, and emotional and psychological fitness examination. As well as meeting the following requirements:
- At least 21 years old prior to the entrance exam
- A citizen of the United States
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- A valid Maryland State driver's license
- Meet all Aberdeen Police Department physical agility requirements :
- 18 Push-Ups in 1 minute
- 27 Sit-Ups (bent leg) in 1 minute
- Complete a 1.5 mile run in 15:20 minutes or less
- 10 Handgun Trigger Pulls in each
The Police Officer is responsible for protecting people and property. He or she patrols assigned areas, responds to calls, enforces laws, makes arrests, issues citations, and occasionally testifies in court cases. Police Officers make traffic stops, respond to domestic disturbances, and may provide first aid in accident/emergency situations until paramedics arrive.
Police Officers may be required to work overtime as necessary with little or no notice; must be able to adapt to changes in working conditions such as schedules (nights, weekends, and holidays), changing shift configurations, and variables of weather; may be required to use deadly force; and must be able to safely perform the duties of the position without posing a threat to the health and safety of themselves or others. Candidates must be of good moral character and emotionally stable.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of this state
- High school diploma or GED required; a degree or additional coursework in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field preferred
- Must successfully complete the required training and probationary period
- Must be able to pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, physical examination, and emotional and psychological fitness examination
- Valid Maryland driver's license
- Professional appearance and demeanor
- Meet all Aberdeen Police Department physical agility requirements
- Excellent communication, customer service, and problem solving skills, including the ability to maintain composure under stress
- Enters into a 3-year contract agreement. a. to be employed only by this Department upon successful completion of all police academy requirements for graduation, and b. to successfully complete this Departments entry level probationary period.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Patrols designated areas in a vehicle and on foot to deter crime, detect violations of laws and ordinances, and identify wanted vehicles/persons or unusual conditions
- Responds to calls for service, evaluates situations, and determines appropriate course of action, which may include intervening in fights, subduing and disarming individuals, helping with crowd control, performing rescue operations, responding to emergency situations, etc.
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants
- Collects, preserves, and processes evidence; performs searches; detains suspicious vehicles and persons; arrests when probable cause exists; and searches, restrains, transports, guards, and processes people
- Enforces all traffic laws and ordinances, operates various types of radar and breathalyzer equipment, administers roadside sobriety tests, arranges for blood or other chemical tests, investigates accidents, directs traffic, and assists in special details
- Inspects and maintains all assigned equipment, including vehicles, firearms, and clothing
- Manages all required paperwork and records and prepares documentation (forms, reports, etc.) when needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
