Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the direction of the Security Director or designee, the off duty Armed Police Officer PRN (APO) is responsible for the protection of the facility’s assets, people and programs. The APO establishes a positive Security image by being highly visible and vigilant to fire, health and safety hazards as well as criminal threats. The APO takes immediate corrective action on violations and/or deficiencies to minimize the potential for harm. The APO maintains a close working relationship with hospital employees to provide a safe and secure environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Supports the hospital’s safety and security management program in an attempt to provide a safe and secure physical environment.
2. Assists all hospital patients, visitors and employees with dignity and respect and acknowledges their needs in a timely manner.
3. The APO’s conduct demonstrates compliance with and reporting of suspected violations of relevant laws, and regulations, the facility’s compliance policies and procedures; and HCA’s Code of Conduct.
4. Provides preventative patrols in the area in and around the Emergency Department.
5. Assists hospital staff with the enforcement of Temporary Detention Orders (TDO) or Emergency Custody Orders (ECO) when appropriate.
6. Provides emergency communication between the hospital and the police department during emergency situations.
7. Responds to various emergency codes to provide security services where appropriate.
8. Assists in restraining patients under supervision of a physician or nurse.
9. Prepares written reports as necessary, including daily activity reports, incident reports, and other reports as required. Reports any and all unusual incidents and crimes occurred during assigned shift on appropriate forms no later than the end of assigned shift. Passes on to relief any and all orders pertaining to post.
10. Is alert for and challenges individuals who seem out of place.
11. Promotes and maintains a safe and secure environment in all areas of the Hospital.
12. Other duties as may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of basic security principles.
2. Skill in presenting ones self as being of high quality character.
3. Skill in remaining courteous in difficult situations.
4. Skill in communicating clearly and effectively in English.
5. Skill in writing clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
6. Ability to maintain excellent grooming standards.
7. Ability to remain in good physical condition to respond to daily rigors of the job.
8. Ability to operate electronic security equipment.
Minimum qualifications:
· Must be a police academy graduate.
· Must be an employed, sworn and commissioned police officer with a local law enforcement agency.
· Documentation of ongoing law enforcement training as regulated by the Law Enforcement Agency.
Preferred qualifications:
· Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) certification/training.
