BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction, to perform skilled work in assembling, installing, maintaining and repairing pipes, fittings, and fixtures pertaining to heating, water, and drainage systems; to perform semiskilled and skilled duties in other maintenance trade areas; and to do other related work as required or assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Maintenance Tradesworker - Plumber classification is assigned to the Director of Maintenance and Operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Installs general plumbing systems, and maintains and repairs existing systems.
2. Installs water and waste piping.
3. Repairs and replaces pipes and control valves, fittings, and a variety of other fixtures and devices.
4. Cuts, threads pipes, and joins pipes and lines utilizing a variety of techniques.
5. Cleans and removes obstructions from drains, water, and sewer systems.
6. Lays out work in accordance with blueprints, schematics, and building code requirements.
7. Maintains an adequate inventory of plumbing related parts, supplies, and materials.
8. Drives a service vehicle to and from work sites.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent education.
2. Two years of experience at the journeyman level in a building maintenance trade area desired by the district.
3. Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
4. Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the plumbing trade.
5. Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes, guidelines, and regulations.
6. Knowledge of backflow prevention regulations and devices.
7. Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures.
8. Ability to skillfully install, maintain, and repair plumbing fixtures and systems.
9. Ability to work from blueprints, shop drawings, sketches, and schematics.
10. Ability to maintain simple records and files, and prepare complete and concise reports.
11. Ability to carry out oral and written directions.
12. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

- - Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 75 to 100 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.
- - Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
- - Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.
