A Day in the Life of a Planning Intern at Toole Design
As an Intern, you will not be fetching coffee or sorting mail - we want you here for real, meaningful work. You'll spend 8 to 12 weeks working with planners, engineers, and landscape architects on a variety of projects. All internships are paid positions.
Your work may include analyzing survey data for a pedestrian city-wide plan, preparing materials for public meetings, or even helping develop graphics for new bicycle facility design guidance. Toole Design is a truly inter-disciplinary firm, so our planners, landscape architects, urban designers and engineers work side-by-side to ensure that our projects are safe for all users, easily constructible, and fit in the community context.
We'll offer you the opportunity to work on a wide range of project types and work products, company-wide trainings on core skills and best practices, and career mentorship from the best in the business. Current and upcoming projects in the Denver office include a corridor plan for North 30th Street in the City of Boulder that will re-envision this major roadway with a priority on active transportation, a feasibility study for the 303 Artway and Montbello Loop urban trails in Denver, and a study and conceptual design project for protected bike lanes in the suburb of Thornton, Colorado. Your responsibilities may offer the chance to attend key project meetings and site visits, and to grow your skills with graphic design programs in the Adobe Suite and/or analysis/mapping programs like ArcMap and QGIS. We are targeting a salary range of $20-$25 per hour for this position.
Qualifications of a Planning Intern at Toole Design:
- Undergraduate: Current enrollment as a third year or higher Urban Planning, Geography/UP, Regional Planning, Urban Designor related program field
- Master's: Current or upcoming enrollment in a Master's in Urban & Regional Planning (MURP), City & Regional Planning (MCRP) or related program field
- Recent graduate: Degree in Landscape Architecture, City Planning, Urban Planning, Urban Design or in a related field or demonstrated passion for the field
- Ability to quickly pick up new concepts, skills, and programs
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Experience in an office environment a plus, as is experience with ArcMap, QGIS, and Adobe Suite

Work Schedule for a Planning Intern at Toole Design:
This full-time position typically works a schedule of 40 hours a week with a minimum of 4 days per week in the office. The Denver office of Toole Design is conveniently located close to many bike lanes including Glenarm Place, Welton Street, 17th Ave, 16th Ave, and 15th street. We are blocks from multiple bus lines including the free MallRide along 16th street as well as light rail. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
