Job Description
This position is for a Part-Time Pharmacy Technician. This tech will work both Inpatient and Outpatient within the hospital & retail.
General Summary
* Under pharmacist supervision, fills orders for unit doses, pre-packaged pharmaceuticals, intravenous admixtures, controlled substances, floor stock, supplemental medications, emergency kits and general stock. Maintains proper levels of pharmaceutical supplies, instruments and equipment. Performs related pharmacy duties such as quality management activities as drug product recalls, nursing unit inspections and pharmaceutical care audits. Delivers and picks-up medications and related items to and from the patient care areas. Assists with training of less experienced techs in their assigned areas.
* Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, and specific individual diagnostic needs of the patients served in his/her department. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group (pediatric, adolescents and/or geriatric patient group, culture and diagnostic specific).
* Consistently expresses and demonstrates compassion and courtesy for patients. Extends courtesy and support to patient's families/visitors. Must be familiar with The Joint Commission medication management standards as they apply to anesthesia, the operating room and perioperative environment
Qualifications
Education & Experience
* Successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician Training Program approved by the Maryland Board of Pharmacy. Training programs accredited by the American Society of Hospital Health System Pharmacists.
* Successful completion of the departmental IV training.
* Registration as a pharmacy technician with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy is required.
* National Pharmacy Technician Certification preferred ( CPhT)
* Completion of a high school level of course work with attainment of a high school diploma or possession of a State High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) is required.
* Minimum of one-year experience as a hospital pharmacy technician or equivalent work experience is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* General knowledge of accepted pharmacy principles, practices and procedures required.
* Ability to perform mathematical operations required in recording and counting of inventory, processing supply requests and for record keeping purposes, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
* Knowledge of generic and trade name drugs is required.
* Highly effective verbal and written communication skills required in order to work with medical, nursing and various allied health staff in order to successfully provide optimal patient care.
* Highly effective verbal communication skills including courtesy, resourcefulness and efficiency in answering questions, giving directions, locating staff and explaining hospital/departmental policies and procedures are necessary. Verbal communication skills may include communicating with an interdisciplinary team, patients, and families. Effective writing skills are also required in order to take messages and maintain miscellaneous records, receipts, reports and logs.
