Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Pharmacy Technician. We are hiring for Pharmacy Tech (1), Pharmacy Tech (2) and Advanced Pharmacy Technicians!
Pharmacy Tech (1) Essential Job functions:
- Transports medications (excluding those medications handled through the pharmacy’s controlled substance distribution system), IV’s, TPN’s, Chemotherapy, medication cassettes, other pharmacy supplies and equipment to the nursing units and clinics. Adds patient specific and re-stock medications to the Omnicell machines located in patient care areas, except the sterile corridor of surgery. Returns discontinued and outdated medications from the Omnicells to the Pharmacy.
- Replaces CPR cart medications following Dr. Cart events. Transfers patient specific medications from the Omnicell on the discharged unit to the Omnicell on the unit to which the patient has been transferred.
- Rotates through all work areas of the pharmacy department, works as a team player to achieve pharmaceutical care for the patient, fills, first doses, restocks and patient specific medications from the carousels, performs monthly nursing unit, clinic and pharmacy area inspections as directed, maintains work areas (IV Room, UD Area, Manufacturing area, store rooms, pharmacy satellites) by restocking and cleaning as needed, answers phone calls
- Triages phone communication appropriately and according to policy, collects quality assurance data and maintains workload records as required, performs other patient and/or drug related duties within the legal scope of their licensure as assigned by the pharmacist and/or supervisor.
- Prepares medications and supplies for dispensing under the supervision of a pharmacist including prepackaging bulk medications by filling unit dose-specific syringes and vials of medications for both adult and pediatric patients, compounded oral suspensions and Grade One mouthwash. Compounds IV admixtures, chemotherapy, desensitization medications, high-cost biologics and pediatric IV’s and restocks CPR cart trays.
- Prepares inventories, orders drugs and supplies from pharmacy storeroom, receives drugs and stocks shelves in various pharmacy locations.
- In the absence of the pharmacist, facilitates the timely distribution of medications by prioritizing orders, seeking out the pharmacist for checking when necessary and working to prioritize STAT order handling.
- Completes and passes required annual technician competencies in a timely fashion. Complies with all departmental, hospital, and regulating agency policies or recommendations. Complies with all state and federal laws regulating their practice.
- Prepares outpatient prescriptions. Performs cashiering duties in the Outpatient Pharmacy as needed
- Assist in the training of new pharmacists and technician employees in their work areas.
- Performs other duties assigned

Advanced Pharmacy Technician Essential Job Functions: (Sign on Bonus Eligible)
- Assures safe, accurate, and timely pharmaceutical care and medication delivery. Identify customer (patient and healthcare provider) requirements that warrant pharmacist or management attention.
- Assists other pharmacy technicians as needed. Assists in training new employees in their area of work. Mentors new employees as requested, and assists pharmacists in entering physician orders into the computer system as needed.
- Prepares and delivers investigational drugs, controlled substances (including insulin products) and drugs utilized in the OR. Maintains Omnicell medication stock in the sterile corridor of the OR.
- Maintains controlled substance inventories. Stocks and restocks controlled substance in the central and IV room pharmacies and in the patient care unit Omnicell automated dispensing cabinets. Returns controlled substances to inventory as needed and removes outdated controlled substances under the direction of the supervisor.
- Supports all pharmacy operations and distributive systems as needed to provide optimal pharmacy care to patients.
- Leads the process to effectively maintain the pharmacy distributive systems, operational projects, and technician responsibilities.
- Maintains pharmacy distributive systems and operations, including all equipment and technology.
- Actively review automation, equipment, and technology within responsible areas for appropriate work performance, accuracy, and reliability.
- Implement appropriate downtime procedures when needed including communication with appropriate external vendors.
- Identify opportunities for efficiency and cost-effective improvements in pharmacy operations and distributive systems.
- Prepares inventories, orders drugs and supplies from wholesaler, checks in drugs that are received and rectifies what is received with the invoice. Maintains Macro Helix for aggregation of 340B, GPO and WAC purchases.
- Prepares IV additives utilizing robotic IV preparation systems.
- Answers phone calls in a courteous manner according to policy. Triages phone communication appropriately and according to policy. Performs monthly nursing unit inspections, maintains workload records if required and collects quality assurance data. Performs other patient and/or drug related duties within the legal scope of their licensure, as assigned by the pharmacist and/or the supervisor.
- Performs other duties assigned including Technician I and Technician II work as needed.
