Responsibilities:
- Under direction of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and supervision of the Clinical Pharmacist on duty, follows established pharmacy and institutional policies and procedures pertaining to the routine support tasks integral to pharmacy operations.
- This will include medication preparation and delivery, and handling of controlled substances.
- Certified pharmacy technicians are responsible for picking, delivering, and refilling Schedule II through VI medication for the automated dispensing machines located throughout the institution.
- Prepares and repackages unit dose medication, prepares sterile and non-sterile compounded preparations following established protocols and guidelines.
- Provides support to customers outside of the pharmacy department, including nurses, physicians, inpatients, and outpatients and escalates questions and concerns to pharmacist on duty.
- Responsible for the accurate transfer of inventory items from pharmacy to specified inventory locations and vice versa.
- Maintains proficiency in all areas of the Department of Pharmacy Services within the scope of a pharmacy technician job responsibilities.
- Prepares medication in unit dose packaging and labels medications using repackaging software.
- Performs routine rounds to patient care floors to deliver medication and miscellaneous supplies.
- Assesses assigned medication storage areas for outdated medication, cleanliness, and appropriate stocking.
- Fills automated dispensing machines using barcode technology.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to support the pharmacist in service of the needs of institutional patients.
- Assist in all areas of the Pharmacy Department as time permits from scheduled assignments.
- Performs required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare sterile and non-sterile preparations.
- Under direction of a pharmacist, compounds non-sterile preparations in accordance with USP Chapter <795> and established policies and procedures.
- Under direction of a pharmacist, compounds sterile preparations in accordance with USP Chapter <797> and established policies and procedures.
- Replenishes stock in compounding areas (medication, needles, syringes, IV fluids) per procedure.
- Under direction of a pharmacist, compounds hazardous preparations in accordance with USP Chapter <800> and established policies and procedures.
- Identifies and disposes of outdated medications and patient specific compounded preparations.
- Triages phone calls to the appropriate individual within the pharmacy department when answering the phone.
- Provides outstanding customer service to external customers including nurses, physicians, and patients.
- Assists with orientation of new pharmacy technician staff.
- Restocks emergency code cart trays and kits. Maintains corresponding records.
- Refills and restocks anesthesia medication trays. Maintains corresponding records.
- Maintains neatness and organization of work area.
- Carries out other duties and responsibilities as required by the technician supervisor, pharmacists, or pharmacy management.
