Pharmacy Technician
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services to Speare Memorial Hospital patients and staff. Pharmaceutical services include all the tasks necessary for the safe and accurate preparation and distribution of medication, for compliance with regulations, and maintenance of required competencies. Using the hospital information system is an integral part of the job. A sign on bonus of $1,500 is available.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*:
Inventory Maintenance.
Places and receives orders for medications and supplies.
Verifies all medications are barcoded and linked to the information system.
Restocks all areas of the hospital where medications are kept.
Monitors usage and adjusts inventory levels as needed.
Works with suppliers to obtain medications in short supply and informs the pharmacist of upcoming shortages
Maintains a backorder list and monitors items predicted to be in short supply.
Removes outdated medication from stock
Returns medication for credit when appropriate. This includes working with the wholesalers, manufacturers, and reverse distributor.
Reconciles return medication reports from the distribution cabinets
Medication Preparation:
Repackages medications for dispensing. Ensures all medications have a barcode that can be scanned, the appropriate expiration date is assigned, labels are complete and correct. Creates labels
Performs non-sterile and sterile compounding consistent with the NH Board of Pharmacy rules and federal regulations, including training, assessment, and testing.
Prepares chemotherapy (Certified Technicians).
Medication Distribution:
Pulls medication stock to be distributed. Ensures it is checked by a pharmacist or certified pharmacy technician prior to delivery.
Delivers medication and refills the ADCs (automated distribution cabinets) using scanning whenever possible.
Pulls replacement stock for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Prepares deliveries for departments/ practices.
Assists the pharmacist in maintaining the ADC formulary, user lists, and records.
Trains new users on using the ADC.
Regulations & Safety
Cleans the compounding area(s) per SMH policies and procedures.
Cleans the drug distribution cabinets
Assists in maintaining records of controlled substance receipt and distribution.
Assists with reconciling inventory variances.
Reconciles controlled substance removals with documentation of administration.
Responds to notices for recalled medications.
Inspects medication storage areas.
Documents required monitoring of temperatures, pressure readings, cleaning, and other testing.
Maintains Safety Data information per policy.
Monitors the removal of medication by EMS personnel.
Assists in obtaining a total inventory count annually.
Assists in doing a controlled substance inventory count monthly.
Monitors nursing activity for compliance with controlled substance inventory counts.
Is familiar with EPA, NIOSH, and FDA rules for medication wasting and destruction. May assist environmental services in collecting medication waste for disposal.
Submits purchase data to maintain compliance with the Drug Supply Chain and Security Act.
Complies with all requirements to maintain NH registration and certification as a pharmacy technician. NH registered technicians who are not certified must obtain certification within 2 years of employment.
Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards.
Billing:
Reviews pharmacy charges daily and notifies the pharmacist of errors or discrepancies.
Processes department charges and codes invoices.
Checks for incomplete orders that have not filed charges.
Reviews 340B purchases. May assist the pharmacist with auditing accumulations and use of 340B medication purchases.
Customer Service:
Works with pharmacy volunteers
Answers the phone
Helps co-workers and hospital customers

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Required: High school graduate or equivalent. Able to read, write, hear, and verbally communicate in English to the degree necessary to perform the job.
Work Experience
Preferred: Six months to one year experience as a pharmacy technician. Experience in a hospital environment preferred.
Licensure/Certifications/Registrations
Required: Current NH licensure as a Pharmacy Technician
Preferred: Successful completion of Certification Exam as a Pharmacy Technician.
Other Skills/Knowledge
Required: Must be detail-oriented. Must be able to work in emergency situations. Must have the ability to be self-directed and prioritize tasks. Must be computer literate. Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to communicate clearly.
Preferred: Knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terminology desired.
