The Pharmacy Cashier is generally the first person all our customers and patients will encounter, so you are the first impression they conceive in their mind. Your position is one of the most critical aspects of the pharmacy’s success. A pleasant smile, tone of voice, empathetic concern and listening to our patients needs and concerns is what develops customer loyalty. You are the pharmacy ambassador.
Under the supervision by the pharmacist, processes POS payment, checkout and complete the pickup of pharmacy related items, within in accordance with Ideal Market procedures, state, federal, rules and regulations and company policy. The Pharmacy Cashier assists pharmacy staff by retrieving filled prescriptions, processing payments for prescription and OTC products as well as other tasks. Reciepts MUST be printed and issued for ALL transactions.
The Pharmacy Cashiers will be working in professional environment located within the Ideal Market Grocery store and will be expected to dress, present and act accordingly. The cashier will be working under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager. The cashier must be able to multitask environment and prioritize activities requiring first attention without losing mental or physical control.
Must be of good moral character with no history of criminal convictions, felonies, and misdemeanors related to Control Substances, theft or assault, even though an arrest or conviction has been dismissed, deferred, diverted, expunged, or pardoned.
Engages Spanish only speaking customers and patients., greeting customers and offering assistance, guidance, referrals as well as recommendations with products and services, therefore cashier must be able to speak both Spanish and English fluently.
Models and shares customer service best practices with all team members to deliver a distinctive and delightful customer experience, including interpersonal habits (e.g., greeting eye contact, courtesy, etc.) and Ideal Market Pharmacy service traits (e.g., offering help proactively, identifying needs, servicing until satisfied, etc.).
Pharmacy Cashier Duties and Responsibilities:
Reviews and complies with the Ideal Market Pharmacy Code of Conduct. Strictly adheres to the Ideal Market Pharmacy policy regarding Good Faith Dispensing during all applicable prescription dispensing activities
Pharmacy Cashiers perform many tasks. We compiled several job listings and identified these primary Pharmacy Cashier duties and responsibilities.
Answer telephone calls in a timely manner, within 3 rings. Refer all calls that require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians, to the pharmacist on duty. Defer technical professional questions to our licensed pharmacist as required by law.
Perform Clerical Duties
The Pharmacy Cashier manages the phones and acts as the face of the pharmacy for incoming customers. The cashier provides customer service, answer questions and address concern our customers have. As a follow up, the cashier will verify with the customer that their issues have been addressed and resolved to their satisfaction. It is also their responsibility to assist the pharmacy staff in providing quick and satisfactory service.
Receive and Selling Completed Prescription Orders
Cashier will contact patient immediately when their prescription request are complete via store intercom, patient telephone, text and /or email.
Processes all prescription refill request orders by telephone and verifies and updates all personal information into the computer along with customer current insurance data to be sure he/she is interacting with the correct patient. Cashier will verify patient’s full name, address, age, insurance provider and notates all changes on the patient profile in the computer.
They assist in packaging orders to be sold to customers. They may be required to create and print patient prescription periodic or annual history report for income tax or other reasons. In order to complete prescription orders, the Pharmacy Cashier sometimes has to check patient prescription authorization as well, particularly for refill orders.
Process Payments
The Pharmacy Cashier processes payments for all pharmacy sales using the pharmacy’s POS system using all credit card payment options. They also process insurance and billing, handling any complications that may arise and keeping the patient informed of all transaction status as a courteous. Pharmacy sales include both prescription and over the counter items.
Assist Pharmaceutical Staff
The Pharmacy Cashier performs any additional tasks required in order to support the pharmacy and ensure quick and quality service to pharmacy customers. This includes administrative and clerical duties as well as some unskilled pharmacy tasks. They take inventory, maintain pharmacy supply levels and stock shelves with product.
HIPPA Compliance
Cashier will require ALL patients present personal Identification when picking up all prescriptions. All personnel and medical information will be protected from public interception, visual, auditory, printed info, or announcement.
Under no circumstances will the cashier, or any pharmacy employee, disclose any patient information on the telephone of fax request without the patients written consent. To do so will be IMMEDIATE TERMINATION.
General Duties
Cashier will restock all OTC items for sale, operation materials(bags, register tape, staples, pens, pencils, etc., etc.)
Perform general daily facility clean up, restock all reusables (bags, tape, staples, etc) as needed or and the end of day for the following days preparation.
End of Day Duties
Cashier will straighten and clean all front-end POS station counters, shelves and equipment. Restock all usable items for the next business day.
Run End-of-Day reports and count day register to verify accuracy , overages or underage’s. All Overages and underages will be researched and explanation attached to each daily report.
Pharmacy Cashier Skills:
Pharmacy Cashiers combine interpersonal and communication skills with a detail-oriented perspective in order to provide both great customer service and support the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy. To be successful, the Pharmacy Cashier needs to be capable of handling many tasks at once, staying organized, and working in a fast-paced environment. Quantitative skills help as processing payment is a large part of their job.

• Possess a High School degree or GED, or being currently enrolled in High School
• Math skill accuracy is a must
• Demonstrating data entry abilities
• Being proficient in MS Word and Excel
• Having excelent customer service skills
• Being able to stand on feet for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds
• Proving basic quantitative abilities
Advanced skills:
Self starter is an absolute plus
Prohibitions;
• Talking or texting on cell phone while working on company time. Emergency phone calls are to be made and received on the pharmacy land line phones, unless extenuating emergency circumstances are present. Such calls shall be kept to a minimum.
• Any piercings of presentable body parts other than typical size and appearance earrings are strictly prohibited, visible tattoos
• Visitation by family or friends for any other reason than pharmacy related issues is not allowed.
• Use of company phones and/or computers for ANY personal business, i.e., shopping, bank reconciliation or web surfing, is grounds for immediate dismissal unless authorized by the pharmacist on duty.
• Flamboyant, extravagant and attention seeking dress, hair color, haircuts, etc. are prohibited. For example : showing up to work with a Mohawk haircut, artificially colored hair( red, green, blue, etc.)
