Position Overview:
Responsible for ordering and maintaining the inventory of pharmaceuticals. Provide support to RNs in narcotic reconciliation and any medication tasks within scope . Responsible to comply with the departmental and organizational goals and strategic plan.
Job Description :
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER
+ Ordering medications
+ Receiving medications
+ Restocking medication bins and Pyxis Med Stations
+ Checking outdates for all medications
+ Generating and sending reports to designated individuals, including Pyxis outdating medications, discrepancy reports, medication shortages, and recalls
+ Supporting narcotic inventory reconciliation efforts
+ Reviewing Pyxis “All Transaction Activity Report” for daily Controlled Substance (CS) usage
+ Reviewing and reconciling of CS documentation on CS Log Sheets
+ Maintaining medication storage area, including cleaning and labeling
+ Performing reverse distribution of expired medications, including non-controlled and CS
+ Reviewing and reconciling reverse distribution manifest
SAFETY:
• Participates in quality improvement processes, including updating and revision of safety and procedure manuals and interdisciplinary projects.
• Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment by complying with policies, procedures and regulations.
• Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.
COMPLIANCE:
• Maintains strictest confidence of all patient protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
• Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by assisting Pharmacists in monitoring nursing unit inspections; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the inventory; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation.
• Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements.
• Develops staff's pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs; training staff, students, interns, externs, residents, and health care professionals.
EDUCATION:
_Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma._
Other: Graduation of an accredited pharmacy technician program.
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:
PHRMTECHR-Registered Pharmacy Technician
OR PHARMC-Certified Pharmacy Technician
OR PHARMT-Pharmacy Technician
TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
2 years of recent experience.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of medical terminology, generic and trade pharmaceutical names, pharmaceutical calculations and laws and regulations.
Knowledge and understanding of different Pharmacy practice settings, including narcotic delivery and procedures.
Knowledge and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing, and record keeping of medications.
Requires a basic working knowledge of legal requirements and accreditation standards including National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), The Joint Commission (TJC), Title XXII, United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.
Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook), related pharmaceutical technology, EHR, and EPIC.
Carry out calculations and execute basic math skills needed for common dosage determination.
Prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies, procedures, and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
Work independently, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
Identify, evaluate and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.
Ensure the privacy of each patient’s PHI.
Build collaborate relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.
