Key responsibilities may include:
- Prescription processing:
Accurately reviewing and filling prescriptions based on physician orders, verifying patient information, and checking for potential drug interactions. - Patient counseling:
Providing clear and comprehensive information to patients regarding their medications, including dosage, side effects, storage instructions, and potential interactions with other medications or supplements. - Medication therapy management:
Assessing patients' medication needs, identifying potential issues, and recommending adjustments to medication regimens in consultation with healthcare providers. - Clinical interventions:
Intervening when necessary to address potential medication errors, including dose adjustments or drug interactions, and communicating these concerns with the prescribing physician. - Immunizations:
Administering vaccinations like flu shots, following proper protocols and patient screening. - Over-the-counter product advice:
Assisting customers in selecting appropriate over-the-counter medications for their needs. - Inventory management:
Maintaining accurate medication inventory levels, ordering new stock, and ensuring proper storage conditions. - Insurance billing:
Processing prescription claims with insurance companies and resolving billing discrepancies. - Staff supervision:
Training and overseeing pharmacy technicians, delegating tasks appropriately. - Compliance:
Adhering to all local, state, and federal pharmacy regulations and maintaining accurate patient records.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree
- Current pharmacy license in the state of practice
- Strong understanding of pharmacology, drug interactions, and medication administration
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare providers
- Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in medication dispensing
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency with pharmacy software and technology
