Summary of Essential Functions
- The Pharmacy Resident serves as a postgraduate year one (PGY-1) resident for the period of one year in accordance with the American Health-System Pharmacists’ standards. The resident will work as a member of the pharmacy department to further develop their pharmacy practice and leadership skills.
- Completion of a project that will provide enhanced patient safety and promote the practice of pharmacy.
- Work together with the Residency Program Director to improve the residency experience for future residents.
- Become competent in management of the pharmacy distribution system in order to work independently in any position within the pharmacy.
- Participate in hospital committee activities.
- Fill orders for drugs, monitor patient drug therapies and provide drug information.
- When staffing as a pharmacist the resident will supervise and direct supportive personnel. In the absence of the pharmacy manager, a staff pharmacist may be required to assume the essential responsibilities and perform the duties of the pharmacy manager.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy or higher degree.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas. May begin residency program while waiting for TX pharmacist license but must be licensed within 7 weeks of residency start date.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal direct supervision, handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule, ability to set priorities, and make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests.
- Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
- Must be able to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, oncology, obstetric, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.
- Primarily works the day shift tour of duty; additional hours may be asked to work other hours as needed, including weekends.
- May be expected to lift over twenty five (25) pounds.
- Ability to distinguish between numbers and symbols.
- Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity with substantial movement of wrist and/or fingers.
- Walking and climbing to accomplish tasks.
- Corrected vision and hearing to normal or near normal range.
- Extended periods of sitting and/or walking depending on specific duties.
- Performs all tasks as designated by their pharmacist preceptor in each of their residency rotations.
- Punctual and dependable; reports to work as scheduled. Absenteeism and tardiness are within policy guidelines.
- Maintains a neat, professional, well-groomed appearance. Wears identification badge.
- Performs work within specified time frames. Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.
- Provides courteous, cooperative and timely service to patients, visitors and staff. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.
- Works cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff. Voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner. Fosters a team environment.
- Demonstrates sound professional judgment consistent with clinical/academic background.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patients, guests and employee information.
- Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire and infection control.
- Performance indicates improved pharmaceutical care to patients demonstrated through satisfaction, concern toward lower cost, and improvement in quality of clinical pharmacy services delivered to facility patients.

- Demonstrates the ability to address problems in a group setting using individual knowledge of tools and techniques for identification and resolution of problems or issues.
- Prepares and dispenses drug orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures and protocols. Interprets drug orders and transcribes to computerized patient medication profiles accurately. Maintains accurate, complete pharmacy patient medication profiles.
- Compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals including sterile products, chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition products accurately.
- Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department. Supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel. Verifies the daily activities of pharmacy technicians. Participates in the performance appraisal of pharmacy support personnel.
- Organizes and prioritizes work assignments. Ensures pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner.
- Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
- Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel. Answers requests at the window.
- Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
