Job Description: UPMC Procirca is looking for a casual Perfusion Assistant to join their dedicated team!
The Perfusion Assistant works under the direction of the physician and perfusionist providing assistance with perfusion services throughout the UPMC Health System. This individual will be required to travel between designated UPMC Hospitals to assist with various perfusion related activities. In addition, the individual may participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
This is a casual role, with mainly daylight hours, but schedule is fluid. Mostly working at Procirca locations in Pittsburgh, with occasional travel (2.5 hours) to outside Procirca locations.Responsibilities:
Maintain optimal communication, close cooperation, and consultation with perfusionist and physicians during delivery of services.
Maintain continuing education and clinical competencies related services provided.
Assist with preparation and completion of lab tests approved by the facility laboratory manager.
Provide autologous blood recovery and biologic therapy as required
Maintain appropriate inventory, equipment, and maintenance of equipment. Assist with the transport of equipment and evaluation of new equipment or process.
Understands and implements specific regulatory requirements associated with services provided.
Completion of quality assurance protocols as established by the perioperative blood management program.
Assist with preparation of the heart lung machine under direct supervision of the perfusionist
Maintain proficiency with the operation and maintenance of a variety of autologous blood equipment and procedures such as autologous cell salvage, production of concentrated platelet rich plasma
Maintain appropriate, timely, and accurate documentation including pre-procedure checklist and filing of all records.
Assist in the education, orientation, and training of new staff or interested personnel.
Required adherence to the Health System policy outlining the care, maintenance, culturing, documentation, and reporting related to the heater cooler units used by the perfusion department.
Educational/Knowledge Requirements:
Associates Degree in Health Science and/or Certification from Technical School Program
Qualifications/Experience
Requirements:
Minimum of 2 years of related hospital perfusion services experience or related manufacturer experience and/or demonstrates equivalent proficiencies.
Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and chemistry.
Basic knowledge of hospital operations and regulatory requirements (as applicable)Basic communication and interpersonal skills
General Computer skills using Word, Excel, and Access
Preferred:Knowledge of blood recovery and biologic processing devices.
Basic understanding of Cardiopulmonary Bypass and associated techniques
.Knowledge of sterile processing, cleaning, and disinfecting patient care equipment, and appropriate documentation of these tasks.
Physical Requirement:
In fulfilling these duties, the perfusion assistant must be able to stand/walk 3-6 hours/day, lift or carry up to 50 pounds 3-4 times/day and push/pull up to 400 pounds 2-3 times/day
Exposure to hazardous biological materials is a common occurrence as is exposure to bodily fluids
Exposure to infectious disease or chemotherapeutic agents is a possibilityLicensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
