Position Summary:
The position provides treatment to pediatric and disabled patients in a clinical setting within the TONHC dental program. The incumbent will perform a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures, as well as specialized pediatric care, including that of medically compromised pediatric patients. The incumbent will be credentialed to perform emergent dental care as needed for patients of any age per the needs of the Dental Program.
Scope of Work:
This position is located in the Tohono O'ohdam Nation Health Care. The incumbent serves as the TONHC pediatric dentist. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Chief Dental Officer and expected to carry duties under minimum supervision and with broad latitude for action.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):
- Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity and a diagnosis of a pathological and irregular condition.
- Perform restoration of simple and compound cavities with standard and prescribed material (cement, amalgam, silicate), space maintenance, limited orthodontic treatment.
- Administer local anesthesia.
- Proficient in appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Perform single and relatively uncomplicated multiple extractions of teeth
- Use scaling and curettage instruments to remove calculus.
- Treat mouth and gum infections.
- Recognize symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseases and referring cases for medical diagnosis.
- May be called upon to provide routine or emergent care for adult patients as needed.
- Responsible for the direction and supervision of pediatric dental residents in all phases of pediatric dentistry.
- Use basic computer skills to complete necessary administrative tasks.
- Must be able to work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) program; complete all EDR training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of dentistry and licensure to practice as a dentist in any state, including Arizona.
- Knowledge of medical diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease related to the teeth' care and treatment.
- Knowledge or ability to recognize common dental disorders and conditions, such as inflamed tissue and tooth decay and perform intra-oral procedures to treat these conditions.
- Knowledge of HIPAA-related rules and regulations.
- Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
- Ability to deal with dental health cases involving behavior and communication problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Minimum Qualifications:
- D.S. or D.M.D. from a dental school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a current and valid Dental License to practice dentistry in the state of Arizona.
- Certificate of Pediatric Dentistry from a two-year accredited pediatric dental residency program.
- Must have current Healthcare Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
- Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
- May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
- If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
- Based on the department's needs, the incumbent(s) may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as employment conditions.
