About The Position
Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night 3x12-Hour Hours per Shift: 19:00 - 07:30 Experience: 2 years of oncology experience preferred, but not required License: Must have a valid compact or state license in hand at time of submission Certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), NIH Stroke Scale Certification Must-Have: High acuity PCU patient experience Description: This position involves working on a high acuity oncology telemetry unit with progressive care and pediatric patients. Pediatric experience is not required. The role involves a heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall management. There is a requirement to float within units of equivalent or lower levels of acuity. Schedules are flexible with the facility determining the schedule without a set schedule or block schedule. Candidates must be flexible and willing to work weekends with 7 straight days off being the maximum. Patient diagnoses include solid tumor oncology, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology. The unit contains 36 beds, with more than 24 dedicated to PCU level care. Candidates must have skills in rapid response teams, feeding tube care, accessing ports, blood product administration, and central and peripheral line care. Candidates should be proficient in starting IVs, managing heparin protocols, cardiac drips, PCA drips, chest tubes, and tracheostomy management. Interpretation of dysrhythmias and arterial blood gases (ABGs) is necessary. Special procedures involve use of equipment such as B450 monitors, a GE telemetry system, bladder scanners, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, continuous bladder irrigation, PCA pumps, and non-invasive airway management. Preferred skills include dysrhythmias management, IV insulin protocols, phlebotomy, chemotherapy administration and monitoring, wound care, and surgical drain management. The orientation includes the first week as a day shift and the second week with a preceptor for 36 hours of on-unit orientation. Weekend shifts are variable with staffing ratios aiming for 1:4-5 but may vary based on unit needs. Candidates are expected to have reliable communication and complete the fingerprinting process as a priority due to compliance timelines.
