Summary
The Payroll Tax Accountant is responsible for the Company's Tax administration, analysis and compliance for Employer related payroll tax considerations. This position must work collaboratively with internal and external clients, state and Federal agencies, outside tax accountants, attorneys and other service providers in carrying out his or her responsibilities. The Payroll Tax Accountant is responsible for the analysis of and coordination of tax related recommendations to CFO & VP of Finance, assessing and communicating risks, reviewing business transactions, the tax impact of client implementation, and recommends to CFO &VP of Finance optimal tax structures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and remit daily/monthly/quarterly payroll tax payments
- Estimate daily tax payments for cash balance
- Daily tax liability reconciliation and deposit maintenance
- Prepare and file timely federal, state, and local payroll tax returns (monthly/quarterly/annual)
- Make necessary tax adjustments and file amended tax returns such as 941-X
- Investigate and handle tax notices with Fed, State and City to resolve any discrepancies or tax matters
- Work with and advise Implementation team on new client set-up and transitional issues that may affect client due to new relationship; Set up and/or audit successor wages/payroll tax information/imports
- Apply/close tax accounts to Federal, State and City; Set up payroll tax code and rate for new tax accounts
- Update/Maintain SUTA and FUTA rates in payroll system
- Audit taxable wages and payroll taxes for first payroll of the year and supplemental wages and payroll
- Reconcile tax discrepancies, import quarterly payroll tax data, post, and research variaƟons in order to file accurate and timely returns
- Year-end financial audit including W-2’s to payroll system/GL reconciliations and tax liability reconciliations/accruals
- Research and respond to payroll tax related questions or requests for executives, sales team, clients, and internal service team
- Ensure that all payroll tax functions, as outlined in SOC compliance documentation are being followed
- Research and study for new tax rules/publications
- Perform other related duties as required (such as new hire report, state wage report, multiple worksite report, state disability report, etc.)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in payroll tax or related field.
- Extensive knowledge of payroll federal, state, and local tax laws and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and quality.
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
