The Director of Payroll reports to the VP, Controller, and will oversee payroll for over 3,500 employees. This position is responsible for managing payroll operations, and aligning systems, processes, and tools across each of our functions. This leader will undertake all payroll transformation projects, provide payroll insights to various stakeholders, manage risks, and ensure adherence to local statutory requirements. This position will have a solid line relationship to the Finance function and a dotted line relationship with the Chief People Officer of the organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Architect the Company's payroll strategy and operating model to support our growing enterprise and partner with the HR and Finance Leads to ensure appropriate interdependencies are functioning correctly.
- Develop strategies that will lead to process standardization in line with statutory requirements, while allowing regional flexibility as needed.
- Maximize the effectiveness of technologies and supporting processes to drive continuous improvement and change initiatives. Provide engaged and involved project management for ongoing payroll system transitions and the implementation of a new time and attendance system.
- Provide oversight of the payroll team and monitor payroll processing, ensuring payroll is accurate, timely and complies with various government regulations.
- Work closely with the accounting team to assist with journal entries, account reconciliations and other duties related to the accounting function.
- Lead the continuous improvement of payroll delivery including developing business cases to present to various leaders.
- Coach staff and provide on-going feedback to develop employees and meet goals.
- Build cross-functional partnerships/relationships to define and develop successful, scalable processes and practices.
- Own the payroll vendor relationships, including selection, negotiation, consolidation, and management in partnership with other key internal stakeholders.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Delaware, Ohio Support Center – expectation is to be in office at least three days per week.
EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
- 10+ years of progressive experience with Payroll and HR systems with demonstrated strong project management skills.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and define how the HRIS/Payroll processes meet business needs and the ability to spot data discrepancies.
- Strong attention to detail, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to maintain highly confidential information.
- Experience managing a team.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative manner while maintaining flexibility and team orientation.
- Very strong customer service focus with the ability to resolve end user issues quickly and accurately.
- Expert proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint) – with advanced use of formulas and functions in Excel.
Desirable:
- UKG Pro HRIS/Payroll experience preferred.
- Background and/or understanding of accounting principles strongly preferred.
- Retail experience preferred
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Business Systems, Finance, Accounting or related field is required.
COMPENSATION:
As required by multiple state pay transparency laws, American Freight provides a reasonable range of compensation for each job posting. Actual compensation is influenced by an array of factors including, but not limited to, skill set, level of experience, and cultural fit. The range of starting pay for this role is $130,000 to $150,000 per year.
