Patient Financial Navigator, Bronson Cancer Pavilion-1This position is responsible for identifying and assessing the financial needs of new and established patients in the Cancer Center & Infusion Center based on specific treatment protocols. Acts as a single point of contact to provide assistance and explanation of the services and programs available to enable the patients/families with making informed decisions regarding his or her diagnosis and the plan of care. This position collaborates with a multidisciplinary health care team to ensure information is current and understood, provides education and links to resources. Focus is primarily on connecting the patient to the applicable financial assistance program that applies to their Insurance provider. After assistance has been arranged then processing of the benefit at the time of administration. Responsible for data collection and reporting of all components of the program. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Bachelor's degree in a healthcare discipline required (nursing or social work preferred), Master's preferred.
** Cancer Center only- Bachelors, master's degree or 6 years equivalent experience in financial navigation **
Minimum 2 years in medical field working with the financial needs of patients with
demonstrated experience and thorough knowledge of Medicare health plans, COBRA
regulations, Medicaid guidelines, Patient Assistance Programs (PAP) and co-pay assistance
programs
Notary public credentials preferred
Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) credentials by the National Association of
Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) and Certified Patient Account Technician (CPAT)
credentials by the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM)
is also preferred
• Effective communication and persuasive interpersonal skills to develop a highly collaborative working relationship with a multidisciplinary team of health care providers
• Effectively communicate and educate the patient and family and provide empathetic emotional support
• Communicating regularly with a wide variety of support services and external agencies, all levels of health care personnel, business office staff, patients and families
• Organizing, prioritizing and managing a wide variety of tasks and problems simultaneously
• Assessing financial needs of the patient and identifying available financial programs to solve the patient’s financial problems
• Effectively compile and generate statistical data reports, identify trends and offer recommendations for improvement required
• Working knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft Office software (word, excel); ability to effectively utilize database and other data collection and reporting software
• High level of initiative and knowledge to seek out available financial programs
• Data entry skills (50-60 keystrokes per minutes)
• Basic Computer skills preferable
• Accuracy, attentiveness to detail and time management skills are required
• Must be able to set and organize own work priorities, and adapt to them as they change frequently
• Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles
• Excellent problem solving skills are essential
Work which produces very high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g. CRT work between 70 and 90 percent of the time, and work involving extremely close tolerances and considerable hand/eye coordination for sustained periods of time.
The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
• Conducts and documents intake navigation assessments and care coordination activities including admission and discharge planning.
• Acts as the point of care encounter with the patient ensuring preplanned services are completed.
• Guides patients, families and caregivers to informed decision making, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team for timely screening, diagnosis, treatment and increased supportive care.
• Identifies health care charges, insurance coverage and the co-pay responsibilities of the patients.
• Facilities interaction and communication with health care staff and providers.
• Initiates, coordinates and participates in interdisciplinary patient care planning activities. Participates in the delivery of individual patient care services within the healthcare team/provider.
• Communicates the financial implications of medical care to both the patient and healthcare team/provider, recommends treatment interventions that best fit the patient’s medical and financial needs.
• Interacts with Medicare, other insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and other financial assistance programs as an advocate for the patient.
• Performs continuous statistical and data collection activities for financial, quality and research purposes.
