Job Description and Responsibilities
In the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) role, you will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to perform basic nursing functions and help patients perform activities of daily living (ADLs). Some of your responsibilities may include:
- At the beginning of each shift, review care plans with nurses every assigned patient
- Participate in the patient admission process.
- Gather patient information upon admission.
- Answer call lights, phones or intercom system to determine patients' needs.
- Take patient vital signs as directed (i.e. temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, food/fluid intake/output, calorie counts, etc.)
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), like eating, bathing, using the restroom, etc.
- Transport patients to newly assigned units.
- Turn and reposition patients using safe patient handling techniques
- Accompany patients for diagnostic tests, at discharge and/or assists patients to ambulate
- Communicate in a timely manner with the nurse regarding patient status, interventions completed, data collected and pertinent input to facilitate care planning.
- Support your department on basic maintenance activities, including stocking patient rooms, moving equipment, ordering and procuring supplies, etc.
- Provide skilled technical care according to unit-specific and generic structure standards, protocols and procedures, prescribed medical interventions, and nursing guidelines as delegated by the RN.
- Maintain a clean and orderly environment, ensuring patient safety and comfort at all times.
- Document patient updates in the electronic medical record (EMR) in a timely, accurate and concise manner.
- Maintains unsupervised access to the unit medication room(s) for stocking and/or retrieving supplies.
You are responsible for maintaining and upgrading your competencies based on the population served, the type and nature of the care provided, and advances in healthcare sciences and technology.
Some weekend shifts are required, and you may be asked to assist in a Patient Safety Assistant role while maintaining PCA/tech duties for that assigned patient.
Working Requirements
- Duties may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT, up to 40 percent of the time
- Must have the ability to read and interpret data from equipment and computer
- Must be able to control confidentiality of sensitive information
- Must have the ability to provide positive customer service
- Must be able to regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assist with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling or otherwise handling material, equipment and other objects
- Maintain patient/employee safety by following controlled access policies
