About the Job
As a Patient Care Assistant at CHI Saint Joseph Health you’ll help our patients feel safer and more comfortable by assisting with their basic daily life activities.
Your success in this role comes from your genuine desire to help patients feel better, whether that means giving them fresh bed linens or checking their vitals. You’re diligent about your tasks, observant of patients’ conditions improving or declining, and accept coaching well.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Check-in with the outgoing patient care assistant at the beginning of your shift to get a report on your patients.
- Conduct hourly rounds checking vitals, maintaining whiteboard information, and assisting with care as needed.
- Assist patients with ambulating as necessary. This may mean helping them reach a recliner in their room, walk to the bathroom, or down the hall. Assist released patients in getting safely to their vehicles outside.
- Assist patients with hygiene needs. This can include a full bed bath, an assisted bed bath, or retrieving towels and soap for ambulatory patients.
- Assist the bedside nurse as needed such as: holding the patient or providing the nurse with supplies, and cleaning up after.
- Help the bedside nurse with any wound checks or dressing changes.
- Change bed linens, check patients’ weight, other tasks as assigned each day.

Responsibilities:
Performs a variety of routine tasks to support the delivery of safe, effective, cost-efficient patient care as delegated by the RN. They provide assistance in transporting, transferring and lifting. They perform cleaning Functions in patient care unit as delegated, and perform selected diagnostic tests
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care as delegated by RN staff
- Monitors and records vital signs
- Assists in providing personal hygiene and physical care needs
- Accurately measures, records, and reports intake and output
- Obtains and records daily weight
- Performs blood glucose testing using blood glucose meter
- Reports changes in patient’s status promptly to RN
- Performs as patient care companion when needed
- Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge process
- Performs unit housekeeping needs
- Acts as a runner/transporter
- Checks and documents refrigerator temperatures as delegated, reporting variances to appropriate personnel
- Updates assigned bed status
- Maintains a safe environment by responding to all bed alarms, call lights, telephones and alerting the correct person
- Keeps patient environment clean, Performs comfort rounds, keeps hallways clear of obstruction, no food or drink at the workstation, reports safety issues and broken equipment appropriately, and adheres to patient safety precautions
- Communicates with patient’s family, physicians, and unit personnel and peers in an accurate, courteous, and professional manner
- Acts as receptionist for the unit; has limited use of the hospital information systems according to hospital policy dependent on the need of the unit. This can include, but not limited to: consulting in EPIC, navigate through EPIC, discharge patients, put milestones into tele tracking, maintain paper charts and checking on MD orders
- Removes saline locks
- Order floor stock and puts it away
- Perform 12 lead EKGs where unit allows
- Other duties as assigned by manager

Required Education:
- High School Diploma, GED or SRNA
Required Licensure and Certifications:
- BLS via the American Heart Association
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training:
- One (1) year direct patient care experience
