About the Job
General Purpose of Position
Provide respectful, professional, positive service in all interactions between co-workers, community members, and public at large. Under general direction, is responsible for work crews planning, supervising, coordinating, directing, and/or performing facility maintenance projects at various assigned city-owned facilities. Establishing quality work standards, and developing and monitoring budgets. This position exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative when managing, leading, monitoring, and supervising the work of employees and contractors to achieve goals that contribute to individual and organizational success by actively supervising, coaching, and mentoring employees in meeting performance and quality standards.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Budgeting
- Participate in the development and monitoring of the department's budget
- Collect and compile data in order to support budgetary requests
- Proposes line item budget based on prior year
- Receives and tracks expenses to stay within budget
- Identify short and long-term resource needs; develop and implement changes to work plans in order to allocate resources efficiently
Supervise departmental personnel
- Supervises maintenance employees, establishing all scheduling practices and assigning appropriate tasks
- Completes employee performance evaluations as required by City policy
- Tracks and posts all scheduling, vacation time, comp time, and sick leave according to procedure
- Oversees needed discipline and tracks all applicable documentation
- Assure professional development for each maintenance employee
Manage and oversee departmental construction and maintenance operations
- Performs and oversees construction and maintenance of grounds, including landscaping, turf management, arboricultural activities, carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, mechanical, concrete, and painting
- Performs and oversees maintenance of equipment and buildings including cleaning, painting, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry
- Repairs and maintains department equipment
- Performs seasonal activities, including hanging and removing seasonal decorations
Schedules departmental projects
- Creates schedule in conjunction with departmental priorities
- Oversee construction projects and activities and any relevant contracts including supervising the work of external contractors and inspecting work to ensure compliance with applicable specifications and quality standards
- Calculates and determines supplies and equipment needed for projects
- Orders supplies for projects
Participates in public relations and education
- Communicates regularly with various user groups, including City staff and other government entities
- Attends committee meetings and other meetings as required
- Provides technical assistance to city officials and the general public regarding parks issues as requested
- Communicates well with public
