Position Description
Job Title: Parish Support/Accountant
FLSA: Exempt
Reporting Functions: Reports to Director of Parish and School Support.
Job Function: Responsible for assisting and training parish and school bookkeepers/business managers with accounting software, general accounting practices and diocesan accounting requirements. Prepare ad hoc financial analysis and reports when requested. Assist with auditing of parish, elementary school and cemetery functions to ensure financial and accounting policies, procedures, and controls are in place; resources are safeguarded and used effectively; accounting procedures are in place, and competent personnel are in positions to implement these procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and training to bookkeepers concerning accounting records, accounting software, financial reports and budget preparation, payroll processing and payroll tax filing.
- Provide assistance and training as needed for parish bookkeepers.
The audit program for parishes, elementary schools and cemetery accounts, specifically, includes but is not limited to:
- Assist with conducting overall financial reviews (audits) of parishes, elementary schools and cemeteries on a scheduled and ad hoc basis to ensure compliance with policies.
During the financial reviews, determines:
- Personnel are of sufficient competence in place and performing their tasks proficiently.
- Adherence to accounting standards and according to Diocesan policies and procedures.
- Obtain sufficient competent evidential matter through inspection, observation, and confirmation to provide a reasonable basis for an objective judgment regarding the financial records of the entity.
- Prepares reports identifying the objective and scope of study, the methods used, findings, observations and any recommendations.
Additional Tasks
- Assist in the review and analysis of the annual budget and financial reports for parishes and cemeteries.
- Prepare Diocesan annual parish assessment calculations.
- Prepare Diocesan response to Capital Improvement requests.
- Assist in the implementation of standard accounting software for parishes.
- Maintain current informational status of federal, state, and local tax laws and requirements that impact the financial operation of the parishes.
- Maintain current status of the tax-exempt requirements (federal, state, and local) as required.
- Maintain current status of the provisions of the omnibus revenue Reconciliation Act of 1993 as it affects organizations within the Diocese of Allentown.
- Assist with the preparing of the annual financial report of parish and school operations for the chancery, Bishop's Annual Report.
- Analysis of Data and Prepare reports as necessary.
- Prepare parish and school projections as necessary for mergers and closures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements:
- Associate degree considered with five (5) years experience in accounting.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in the accounting, finance, or business administration fields.
- Professional certification a plus.
Other Requirements:
- Computer literate in hardware and software applications, PC/laptop and network.
- Excellent communicator with the ability to work with all levels of management and non-management personnel.
- The ability to work independently without the benefit of close supervision.
- Knowledge of accounting software, Sage, QuickBooks, etc.
- Proficient with Excel.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows 10; Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Valid driver's license.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone. Use of hands to operate standard office equipment; with occasional reaching and lifting up to 10 pounds.
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Normal Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May be required to work on other than normal workday or weekly schedule. Is required to travel for business purposes (normally not overnight). May encounter some exposure to household pets such as cats and dogs.
