About the Job
Reporting to the building trades supervisor, the painter will properly prepare various kinds of surfaces (wood, metal, plaster, masonry, sheetrock, etc.) and apply a prime or finish coat of paint, lacquer, or other material. Preparation includes the filling of voids and holes by using spackle and tape, sanding, stripping, or using other methods that may be required to ensure an appropriate surface for application of paint or other materials. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Correctly prepare all areas including the removal of putty, priming and puttying of windows or glazing, as required
- Remove dirt and dust and clean surfaces properly before applying paint or finish
- Use good judgment and protect nearby surfaces from paint; ventilate areas as required
- Properly apply paint, stains, and other finishes
- Work neatly and remove or protect items such as switch plates, heater covers, piping, and other features which need special attention to stay clean during the painting process
- Demonstrate care in cleanup operations after painting; carefully remove any spotting and leave area completely clean
- Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and members of a diverse community
- Follow all safety rules and procedures
- Safely operate tools and equipment necessary to perform job duties
- Perform work in a prompt, neat, and careful manner that displays common sense, planning, and thoughtfulness
- Coordinate work with other shops as necessary
- Work with part-time summer employees to ensure proper painting techniques and Colby standards are being followed
- Advise supervisor of any issues encountered or any damage which occurs while performing work
- Safely work from ladders, staging, lifts, scaffolds, etc., as required
- Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education are a plus
- Minimum of three years of experience in painting in a residential and/or commercial setting required
- Must have working knowledge of different kinds of paints and methods of application
- Experience with plastering, application, and finishing of drywall compound preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with a high level of motivation
- Attention to detail and accuracy are critical
- Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision, as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
- Strong ability to multi-task is essential
- Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
- Valid drivers license required and must meet the Colleges Fleet Safety Policy requirements

This position interacts with colleagues within Facilities Services, other departments, faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Position hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime as necessary to support operations. General indoor and outdoor facilities and campus environment. Walking, including climbing stairs or ladders, standing, bending, twisting, working from staging and lifts, and ability to lift 50 lbs. required.
