The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails, and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position ofSign Painter & Letterer II. This is a supervisor position overseeing painting crews DCR and other agencies in collaboration. Additionally, perform painting tasks and/or projects as assigned by the maintenance foreman. Position location:1 Edwin H Land Blvd., Cambridge, MA. *DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* 1. Supervise employees assigning work, provide on the job training to new employees and direction, plus evaluate work performance. 2. Read or interpret blueprints, sketches, instructions, or layouts to understand work/project to be completed. 3. Select and purchase appropriate materials by conferring with vendors. 4. Estimates time and materials needed to complete a project by measuring surface area, computing number of gallons of paint or rolls of paper needed and time required for the purpose of scheduling work to be completed. 5. Prepares surfaces for painting, staining, etc., using mixes and blends paints, stains varnishes, etc. 6. Applies protective covering to any kind of surface; applies paints, varnishes, stains, wallpaper, and other covering to interior and exterior surfaces. 7. Repairs damages to interior walls, refinishes floors, and prepares wallboards and plasters. 8. Uses hand tools, paint brushes, scrapers, sand blasters, sprayers trowels, putty knife, glass cutters, mixers, sanders, drills, compressors, generators, and/or ladders. 9. Ensures that all safety precautions and personnel protective equipment are being utilized appropriately. Personnel are adhering to all safety precautions following the rules, policies and regulations compliance with the Massachusetts State Riggers codes when erecting ladders and scaffolding in high and low places on or around water. 10. Operates maintenance equipment and vehicles as necessary. 11. Performs related duties as required such as preparing various reports; maintaining records and files; setting up signs and barricades, etc. *PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:* * Knowledge of the practices and techniques of painting. * Knowledge of the types and uses of painting material such as paints, varnishes, stains, etc. * Knowledge of the types and uses of painting tools such as brushes, rollers, spray machine guns, etc. * Knowledge of the types and uses of small handheld tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, chisels, drills, etc. * Knowledge of the types and uses of handheld power tools such as power saws, power drills, power hammers, etc. * Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of wood. * Knowledge of the methods of preparation of wood, metal, glass, plaster, cement and other materials and surfaces for painting. *First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.* MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in painting work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below. Substitution: I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school at the high school level with a major in painting may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
