Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) seeks entire Overhead Crews (Foreman/A Lineman/B Lineman/C Lineman/Operator/Groundman).
Successful candidates will possess existing experience working together as a construction crew Preference may also be given to candidates who are able to bring along additional qualified candidates to form entire work crews.

Foreman:
- Provide direct supervision & technical guidance to Linemen, Apprentices and Groundmen performing maintenance & construction on all electrical distribution and associated equipment projects.
- Responsible for coordinating essential personnel on-site for the project to include crew mobilization.
- Communicate, demonstrate and enforce safety requirements and best practices.
- Possess comfort level with using new technologies (mobile devices/apps) and/or show willingness to learn. Such tools are bringing Jobsite access to improved information and efficiencies.
- Manage supplies, materials and equipment.
- Assist with planning, directing and budget activities concerned with the construction of a pole line and other electrical material and equipment used for distribution line construction projects.
- Read and interpret site plans, construction drawings, and scopes of work.
- Communicate directly with General Foremen, Superintendents, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Line Crews and other project personnel as required.
- Understand and follow detailed construction schedules.
- Possess High School Diploma or Equivalency.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints and scopes of work
- Able to coordinate & collaborate effectively with multiple levels within company...from fellow field professionals to back office support functions.
- Willing to travel and work away from home.
- Experience with digger derricks, bucket trucks, trenchers, and groundwork with utility crews is required.
- Ability to work at heights up to and above 60 feet preferred.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate & encourage teamwork skills and able to understand, comprehend, and follow directions in the workplace.
- Must have a quality work ethic and be committed to optimal Customer Service.
A Lineman:
• Able to perform rigorous physical labor as required. Including but not limited to climbing, rigging, lifting, rescue operations, etc.
• Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
• Proficient in all aspects of energized line work.
• Possess professional demeanor and interact in positive way with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
• Proficient in understanding and reading blueprints.
• Able to properly sag wire.
• Capable of leading crew in assembly and erection of structures to all heights, in absence of Crew Foreman or with minimal supervision.
• Understands dead ending and sagging operations for all conductors.
• Capable of executing hot line work on conductor systems.
• Proficient at operation of Bucket Truck, Digger Derrick, Backhoe, other
• Proficient in Pole/Tower Climbing.
• Proficient in all aspects of heavy lifting and rigging.
• Must be familiar with induced voltage.
• Understands grounding procedures.
• Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
• Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover up.
• Must be able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
• Understands how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
• Understands proper use of phasing sticks
• Able to identify and locate puller and tensioner setups.
• Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
• Capable of planning safe work based on a job print or work order.
• Understands how to obtain a "one shot" on a recloser.
• Understands minimum approach distance.
• Understands flag and tag procedures.
• Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
• Must be able to effectively lead a Job Task Safety Analysis meeting or tailgate briefing.
• Capable of safely installing and removing mechanical jumpers.
• Possess knowledge to properly inspect rubber goods, cover and PPE.
B Lineman:
•Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized conductors.
• Capable setting poles and anchors according to safety policies and specifications.
• Maintains company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
• Does all other related work as required to complete the job.
• Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
• Capable of learning distribution voltages on a circuit.
• Must be familiar with induced voltage.
• Capable of learning to understand and read blueprints.
• Capable of assisting with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
• Able to work productively from an aerial device.
• Capable of assisting in troubleshooting.
• Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
• Able to work alone on de-energized lines.
• Capable of obtaining knowledge of wire stringing techniques.
• Capable of learning and understanding how to sag wire from structure or bucket.
• Able to assist with assembly and erect poles to all heights.
• Able to assist in framing and setting most basic line structures.
• Able to assist in framing a de-energized pole structure in the air.
• Able to assist with installing all types of compression connections.
• Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
• Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover up.

- Possess working knowledge of proper techniques for setting poles and anchors.

- PROFICIENT in safe operation of heavy equipment such as line/bucket trucks, knuckle cranes, digger derricks, etc.
- Possess basic knowledge of rigging principles.
- Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
- Capable of receiving and following directions.
- Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
- Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
- Understands the basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
- Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.

- Capable of making up and using a hand line.

Groundman:
- Performs various manual tasks in the construction & maintenance of overhead power lines.Able to comprehend, interpret and follow direction from Crew Foreman and senior crew members.
- Able to comprehend and apply training in Safety, First Aid and job/task specific topics.
- Able and willing to perform rigorous physical labor in outdoor weather conditions.
- Demonstrate a professional appearance & attitude in dealings with co-workers, customers, subcontractors and the general public.
- Assemble materials on the ground and hoist them into the work area using handlines and other safe methods.
- Assist other crew members digging/filling pole holes and trenches using a shovel.
- Flag traffic and set up job sites as directed.
- Maintain organization of tools and materials on work vehicles.
- Perform set up, clean up and organizing of job sites.
- When aptitude is demonstrated and work allows, may receive training in the operation of vehicles, light equipment and tools.
The employee is required to sit; frequently climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or maneuver up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or maneuver up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work is primarily performed outdoors so physical exposure to often extreme weather conditions, animals and insects and other outdoor hazards is unavoidable and required.
