About the Job
The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician assists with the preparation and dispensing of medications for patients served by Broadlawns Medical Center Outpatient Pharmacy. All duties are performed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fosters a team environment by working cooperatively with all staff. Assists coworkers in tasks, as time permits. Voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner.
- Prepares medication for distribution lo patients based upon computer generated prescription labels and original prescriptions for checking and verification by a registered pharmacist.
- Manages prescription files.
- Files the completed prescription according to drug schedules (regular :file and CSA schedules three through five) and places them each in numerical order.
- Removes older prescriptions from the file and transfers them to properly labeled storage boxes.
- Answers phone calls from outpatients requesting refills or general information about patients' medication and the use of BMC pharmacy. Forwards any calls requiring professional assistance to pharmacists, pharmacy supervisors, or Director of Pharmacy. Forwards other calls to departments throughout the medical center if necessary.
- Distributes dispensed prescriptions to patients or their representatives at the pick-up window. If a patient requires medication counseling, notifies a phrmacist of the need for professional assistance.
- Removes prescription bags from shelves when patients do not pick up medication within 10 days of filling, processes credits and returns medication to stock as appropriate.
- Performs routine maintenance and accuracy verification of automated dispensing machine and other technologies as needed.
- Stocks automated dispensing machine according to established policies and procedures.
- Performs work within specified time frames. Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.
- Provides courteous, cooperative, and timely service to patients, visitors, and staff.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, visitor, and employee information.
- Maintains clean work areas.
- Completes inspection of assigned medication on a monthly basis; assists in maintaining inventory of crash cart drugs with adequate dating.
- Assists in training new technicians, pharmacy interns and College of Pharmacy clerkship students as requested by supervisor.
- Completes assigned work in the departmental education plan as assigned to maintain competency.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Enters, reschedules and discontinues routine medication orders from written physician prescriptions to patient profile in computer with all order entry verified by a pharmacist prior to patient receipt of medication.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of employment.
- Successful completion of the Certified Pharmacy Technician examination within 12 months of beginning position.
- Ability to interact with patients, co-workers and other medical center personnel in person or by telephone in a pleasant, courteous manner.
- Ability to write legibly.
- One year experience in a pharmacy or equivalent.
- Ability to operate a calculator for basic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Knowledge of medical terminology, including generic and brand name pharmaceuticals.
- College course work in math or science or similar medically related course work.

Further, if offered a position with Broadlawns Medical Center, I also agree to submit to a medical history and physical examination, which includes drug testing, provided by Broadlawns Medical Center and understand that my appointment is conditional on satisfactorily passing the examination prior to being placed on the job. I understand that I will be responsible for providing BMC proof of MMR (Measles, Mumps, rubella) immunity and/or immunization records at my expense prior to beginning my employment.
