About the Job
Under the direction of practice providers, is responsible for clinical duties such as obtaining medical records, responsible for preparing the patient for the exam, beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements, performing preliminary eye function testing, explaining medication or procedures to patients, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms and supplies at an outpatient care site. Also responsible for some administrative duties in conjunction with patient contact. We offer on-the-job training, tuition reimbursement and continuing education to get certified.
Minimum Education
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Coursework in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology/Biology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Completion of an Ophthalmic Assistant program or other Health Science degree program preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
- 1 year experience, preferably in a physician practice or outpatient clinic setting involving patient contact.
Required Licenses/Certifications
- BLS Certification through American Heart Association within a month of hire
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 18 months of hire.
- Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Willingness and ability to perform self-study and on-line training for completion of Ophthalmic Assistant program in pursuit of certification within 18 months of hire.
- Ability to report patient care observations, deviations from patient’s plan of care and other pertinent information under the direct supervision of a provider or certified staff.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated moderate knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Demonstrated strong knowledge of Medical Terminology.
Pay Range: $19.29 - $28.50
