SCHEDULE: This department works 10 hour shifts, Monday - Thursday.
SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to build and maintain county roads and maintain road signs. This is accomplished by operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, graders, asphalt paving equipment, and backhoes; and hauling road materials for activities such as patching roads and installing culverts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Processes daily work orders; repairs street signs; installs street sign base with a sledgehammer; inserts poles with new signs if needed; puts out warning signs for roadwork.
- Cuts or trims tree limbs using chainsaw.
- Hauls materials to County yard and job sites.
- Operates heavy equipment.
- Removes debris (concrete, rocks, tree limbs, trash) from roadway.
- Performs welding/fabricating and mechanic work; performs building maintenance work such as sweeping, cleaning and repairs.
- Performs basic road maintenance; repairs potholes; replaces signs; shovels and spreads various materials.
- Conducts traffic flagging; maintains consistent visual and radio communications with other employees, operators and traveling citizens; implements lane closures and traffic control.
- Services trucks and equipment.
- Maintains cleanliness of the work area, office and bathroom.
- Sands roads during inclement weather situations; cleans streets with a street sweeper.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has no supervisory or budget responsibility.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to operate heavy equipment and obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
- Knowledge of operating all equipment such as chainsaw, dump truck, sweeper, backhoe, roller, steel wheel, compactor, air tools, hand tools, shovels, racks, weed eaters and mowers, power washer, water-truck and sand-truck.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to make decisions in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Ability to prioritize and complete multiple projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Class A Commercial Texas Driver's License..
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position works both in a shop and outside. Position has daily exposure to varying temperature ranges and seasonal fluctuations in weather conditions; and occasional exposure to noise, vibration and physical hazards. Health and safety hazards are minimal. Safety glasses, steel toe boots, gloves and ear plugs are recommended. Lifting, carrying, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, climbing, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting and talking are frequently required.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.
