Operations Intern - Old Dominion Freight Line

To learn OD operations and culture while learning safe and effective ways to load and unload freight and complete several projects throughout the internship, eventually “filling-in” for the operations supervisor during the last few weeks of the program




Primary Responsibilities



+ Learn dock operations by shadowing team members and various supervisors and managers at the location


+ Learn to effectively and safely operate a forklift


+ Assist in securing freight inside trailers, learning appropriate tools and supplies


+ Participate in monitoring the daily safety of each employee


+ Learn and participate in evaluating and teaching safe lifting techniques


+ Learn proper loading and unloading techniques and ensure compliance


+ Learn the service center operations and make suggestions for improvements


+ Learn DOT and OSHA regulations and ensure compliance


+ Learn to effectively use computer/internal freight monitoring systems


+ Develop an understanding of various forms such as shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports and exception forms


+ Successfully complete projects as assigned





Job Qualifications


Education:



+ High school diploma or equivalent, currently attending college





Experience:



+ Willingness to learn operations and complete assigned projects


+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills


+ Great interpersonal skills with a positive attitude
