OpenVMS MQ Administrator/SME Job Description
An OpenVMS MQ Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the Message Queue (MQ) infrastructure on systems running the OpenVMS operating system and ensuring the reliable and efficient exchange of messages between
different applications or systems running on the OpenVMS platform.
Installation, Configuration and Troubleshooting:
An OpenVMS MQ Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the Message Queue (MQ) infrastructure on systems running the OpenVMS operating system and ensuring the reliable and efficient exchange of messages between
different applications or systems running on the OpenVMS platform.
Installation, Configuration and Troubleshooting:
- Install, configure, and upgrade MQ software on OpenVMS systems. Set up and configure queue managers, channels, listeners, and other MQ objects based on organizational requirements.
- Implement new changes and monitor MQ queues, MQ log files, Dead letter queues, MQ client applications and MQ client configurations.
- Implement Channel level security like using SSL for MQ channels, communications.
- Stop/start of MQ managers, channels, Listeners, Namelist, Services, Processes and other MQ objects.
- Understanding of MQ errors and fixing the same. Working knowledge on How to put and get messages in MQ queues.
- Understanding on how to set permissions, refresh security and taking dump of MQ messages on OpenVMS.
- Perform day-to-day administration tasks such as managing queue managers, queues, channels, and other MQ objects. Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure system availability and reliability.
- Should be able to understand and implement Logicals and Symbols needed to setup MQ environment on OpenVMS servers.
- Good knowledge of OpenVMS Directory and file systems. Setting the protection and security for MQ objects.
- Knowledge on user identifiers and privileges needed for MQ setup.
- Understanding various configuration files on OpenVMS servers like .com, .log, .exe and any other MQ related extension files.
- Knowledge on OpenVMS mail services.
Security and Access Control: Implement security measures to protect the messaging infrastructure on OpenVMS systems.
Configure authentication, authorization, and encryption settings. Manage access controls, user accounts, and permissions for MQ systems.
Integration and Connectivity: Collaborate with application developers and system administrators to integrate messaging functionality into OpenVMS applications. Configure and manage network connectivity, including firewalls and routing
rules specific to OpenVMS.
Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitor message queues and system health, proactively identify performance bottlenecks, and resolve issues. Investigate and troubleshoot message delivery failures or other system-related
problems specific to OpenVMS.
Performance Optimization: Analyze system performance on OpenVMS platforms and implement optimizations to improve message throughput, latency, and overall system efficiency. Optimize message flows, queue configurations, and
resource allocation on OpenVMS systems.
Capacity Planning: Monitor system usage, forecast future message traffic, and plan for system scalability and capacity requirements on OpenVMS. Make recommendations for hardware and software upgrades as needed.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain documentation related to system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides specific to OpenVMS. Generate regular reports on system performance, usage statistics, and
operational metrics.
Change Management: Implement changes to the messaging infrastructure on OpenVMS in a controlled and documented manner. Coordinate with stakeholders to schedule and execute changes, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing
operations.
Upgrades and Patches: Stay up-to-date with the latest MQ software releases and patches compatible with OpenVMS. Plan and execute upgrades and patches on OpenVMS systems, ensuring compatibility with existing systems and
applications.
Disaster Recovery: Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans and procedures for message queue systems on OpenVMS. Test and validate backup and recovery processes regularly, taking into account the unique aspects of
OpenVMS platforms.
Collaboration and Support: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including application developers, system administrators, and network engineers, to support and troubleshoot issues related to the messaging infrastructure on
OpenVMS. Provide guidance and support to users of the messaging systems.
OpenVMS MQ Administrators should have a deep understanding of OpenVMS operating systems, MQ concepts, and system administration principles. They should also possess excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the
ability to work in a fast-paced environment specific to OpenVMS environments.
