Community Care Veterinary Specialists, in beautiful Gainesville, Florida, is a privately owned small animal speciality hospital in North Central Florida.
The Oncology Technician works to facilitate patient care through the assistance of the oncologist in diagnosing, staging, and treating oncological disease. This requires laboratory sample collection and submission, imaging such as radiography, as well as chemotherapy administration. They are responsible for creating an environment of teamwork in which quality medicine is delivered. The Oncology Technician also facilitates communication between the oncologist and client by taking thorough histories and relaying treatment plans both medical and financial to the client. The Oncology Technician advocates for patient and staff safety by maintaining stringent guidelines for hazardous drug use while handling and administering chemotherapeutic drugs. This may be a part-time or full-time, hourly, (non-exempt) position.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three to five years of Veterinary Medicine Experience, specifically in Oncology and Speciality practice.
- Extreme comfort in venipuncture and catheter placement for chemotherapy purposes.
- Familiarity with chemotherapy drugs, treatments, and protocols.
- Knowledge of animal care and nursing.
- Comfort with chemo room, hood, and preventing cross-contamination.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, basic canine and feline anatomy, basic canine and feline physiology, infection control principles; and medical math requiring addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Knowledge of the equipment and materials used and their availability and applications.
- Comfort running the floor and manage clinic flow for inpatient and outpatient circumstances
- Qualified candidates are excellent communications and multi-taskers, who are able to work independently, and as part of a team. They should be detail oriented and able to provide exceptional customer service and professional client and inter-colleague communication.
- Must have a growth mindset and be receptive to feedback for continuous growth.
- Must be able to lift 40lbs.
- CVT preferred but not required.
Duties:
- Oncology Veterinary Technicians handle in person, email and telephone interaction, maintenance of veterinary medical records, reviewing recommended treatments and procedures, as well as, discuss discharge and after-care with owners.
- Provide coaching and training to team-mates.
- Administer medications, treatments per DVM instruction, documenting all steps within medical records software.
- Work in a fast paced environment that prioritizes patient safety.
- Support team members in all services. Seek out opportunities to help others during moments of downtime. Practice global awareness.
- Respond quickly and calmly to crisis while maintaining a high standard of client care.
- Communication: Convey messages to clients and teammates to ensure successful patient and client care.
- Patience & Compassion: Remain professional at all times. Demonstrate respect towards each client's circumstances, goals and decisions. Communicate respectfully with doctors, teammates and clients. Contribute towards patient and client comfort regardless of the situation or challenges presented.
