About the Job
New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking an Full-time 32 hour Oncology Solid Tumor Nurse Navigator to work in our Scarborough office. The Nurse Navigator helps the patient and family navigate along the health care continuum. Will interact with patients and offer advice and counsel to patients, as well as advise physicians of patient’s needs and recommended interventions. Perform nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs over the phone and in the office. Work collaboratively with the Clinic Manager and infusion nurses in carrying out day to day aspects of clinical operations. This person will communicate issues to the appropriate Clinic Manager, Department Manager or Director.

Required Experience:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.
- Coordinating appointments with providers to ensure timely delivery of diagnostic and treatment services and ensures that appropriate medical records are available for these appointments. Facilitates linkages to follow-up services.
- Assist physicians, conduct patient assessments.
- Works closely with the Research Department to provide access to clinical trials.
- Maintain communication with patients, survivors, families, and the health care providers to monitor patient satisfaction with the cancer/blood disorder experience.
- Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for that patient’s specific needs in a timely manner. Alert physician as needed to patient needs that require physician intervention.
- Follow up with patients as needed by telephone, to ensure compliance with treatment guidelines and to evaluate changing or uncertain clinical situations.Arrange language translation and/or interpretation services as needed.
- Works closely with the Financial Advocates to facilitate financial support for all modalities of treatments.
- Maintain patient care standards and assures that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment and documentation are completed safely and effectively.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in-services and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations and community sponsored programs specific to Oncology and Hematology.
- Incorporates evidence-based research into clinical practice and provides recommendations on practice clinical policies and processes to practice Directors.
- Coordinate patient care responsibilities within the scope of the practice for licensed and unlicensed health care providers.
- Assists with arrangement of transportation if needed.
- Community Outreach: Builds partnerships with local agencies and groups (referrals to other services and/or survivor support groups).
Education and/or Experience
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Licensed Nurse within State of Maine required.
- Two years plus nursing professional experience required
- Hematology/Oncology experience preferred.
- OCN required within 1 (one) year of hire or when eligible based on ONCC criteria
- ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Certification required within 6 (six) months of hire
- AONN required within 2 (two) years of hire
