Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Occupational Therapy addresses the physical, cognitive, psychosocial, sensory-perceptual, and other aspects of performance in a variety of contexts and environments to support engagement in occupations that affect physical and mental health, well-being and quality of life.
The Occupational Therapist II assesses individual patients Occupational Therapy needs, and then establishes and implements an occupation-based treatment program and goals, using the therapeutic use of everyday activities to develop, regain, or improve the skills needed for daily living in the home, community, workplace, school and other settings.
The Occupational Therapist II reviews physicians’ referrals for occupational therapy services and utilizes information obtained from the patients records relative to their medical history, administers evidence-based exams and screening tests to identify impairments, functional limitations, disabilities and level of performance. Performs evaluation procedures to determine patients’ performance capacities and deficits such as functional, cognitive, visual and perceptual abilities. Analyzes evaluation test results to determine a plan of care to include appropriate interventions, goals, expected intensity, duration of therapy, and recommendations for discharge. Provides education to patient and caregiver regarding purpose of activity, use of equipment, home exercise and activity. Performs regular re-examinations, measures outcomes, and seeks feedback from patient, caregiver, and patients’ interdisciplinary medical team. Develops and modifies treatment programs to meet the changing needs of the patient. Oversees the clinical work of the Occupational Therapy Assistant and Rehabilitation Aide. Manages multiple patients at the same time. Provides services and required documentation in an accurate and timely manner and in accordance with professional and regulatory standards. Participates in outside continuing education and incorporates information into practice. Performs other duties as assigned.
Additionally, the Occupational Therapist II assists with educating and orienting new staff, acts as fieldwork educator for students and interns, and participates as instructor in an established class or program. Participates in educational events within the clinic and community. Attends specific clinical education coursework which meet the guidelines of California Board of Occupational Therapy and provides in-services to staff.
Education and Experience
- Eighteen months’ experience as an Occupational Therapist in an acute healthcare system environment. Experience with a range of diagnoses including general medicine, orthopedics, neurology, and cardiopulmonary. Completes mandatory stroke specific education requirements for certification.
- Previous experience with Microsoft Office and healthcare database systems preferred. Bilingual or multilingual preferred.
License Required
- Current licensure as an Occupational Therapist in the State of California
Certifications Required
- Current BLS Certification
