Job Description
Location: Assigned work location will be West Palm Beach, FL. Travel is required to South Florida Water Management District locations throughout South Florida, typically not overnight.
The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting the organization’s occupational health and safety program. Responsibilities include developing and implementing District safety standards. Additionally, the Safety Specialist will conduct accident investigations, identify corrective actions, monitor driver motor vehicle records, perform comprehensive inspections, and promote a multi-faceted safety program throughout the District.
Of critical importance is a strong knowledge of safety theory, principles, practices, and techniques. Must have the ability to influence others to follow procedures and practices that mitigate bodily injury and property damage.
The Safety Specialist is a strategic part of the organization’s occupational health and safety team and must be able to respond to complex and difficult challenges. It will be necessary to exercise integrity, diplomacy and discretion relative to sensitive and confidential information.
Employment Guidelines
Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Business Administration or related field and 2+ years of substantive practical experience. Must have basic proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. A basic understanding of SharePoint and/ or a safety program software is desirable but not required. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.
Prefer safety industry designations and/or certifications in CPR, Instructor in First Aid, and Defensive Driving.
Physical Requirements
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during, and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
