Job Summary
Physician assistants and/or Nurse Practitioners provide quality patient care in an outpatient setting. The duties of these midlevel providers cannot be rigidly defined, but the following are the commonly expected duties of the position in accordance with the state and federal law, and in collaboration with supervising physicians.
- Obtains medical histories and completes physical exams.
- Completes patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment plans and records in patient chart.
- Performs or assists in performance of laboratory and related studies as appropriate to the supervising physician practice.
- Performs therapeutic procedures inclusive, but not limited to, injections, immunizations, suturing, removal of foreign bodies, and other clinical procedures.
- Performs office surgical procedures inclusive of, but not limited to, skin biopsy, ingrown toenail removal, incision and drainage of abscesses and mole removal.
- Cares for orthopedic problems inclusive of, but not limited to, strains, sprains, dislocations and simple fractures.
- Performs and/or screens special medical tests inclusive of, but not limited to, electrocardiography, cardiac monitoring, radiography, audiometric and vision screening, pulmonary function tests.
- Instructs and counsels patients regarding mental and physical health.
- Refers patients to appropriate specialists.
- Assists in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care in the home, nursing facility, or hospital.
- Provides immediate evaluations, treatment and institution of procedures essential to providing appropriate response to emergency medical problems. Prompt response requires pre-approved plan as per supervising physician.
- Assists in ordering and maintaining equipment, medications and records of the practice.
- Orders laboratory tests, radiographic procedures, diets, physical occupational or speech therapy or rehabilitation, or inhalation therapy.
- Administers and/or orders medications.
- May, at the request of a police officer, withdraw a specimen of blood from a patient for the purpose of determining blood alcohol, drug level or medicolegal testing.
- Directs other medical personnel in the provision and execution of patient care.
- Directs and assists emergency personnel in the stabilization and transport of the critically ill patients.
- Is competent to provide care to the population served, as identified by PACHS.
- Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Supervising Physician or Clinic Nurse Manager.
- Demonstrates understanding of the Medicare Compliance Plan.
- Adapts positively to the ever changing health care environment by supporting technology and process changes.
- Documents patient information in the electronic/paper medical record in an accurate and timely manner.
- Maintains active logon's/passwords for computer software's systems that are required for assigned work area.
- Travel to nursing home facility and outreach clinics.
Education & Work Experience:
- Graduate of a CAHEA (Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation) or an ANCC approved Physician Assistant training program or of an accredited nurse practitioner program.
- Maintain a current license to practice in the state of Iowa as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
- National certification is required.
- ACLS certification.
- CPR, BCLS, ATLS, NRP
- 3+ years clinical experience as a Registered Nurse in a related healthcare setting preferred
- 1-3 Years' experience as a PA in a clinical/hospital setting preferred
