The Department of Emergency Medicine is the only academic department in the nation that publishes a full-fledged scientific journal in Emergency Medicine. Started as the California Journal of EM in 2000, the editor-in-chief, Dr. Mark Langdorf, and managing associate editor, Dr. Shahram Lotfipour, revamped the journal in 2007 to reflect a unique niche of scholarship focusing on population health, public policy and advocacy, and systems of medical care. The Western Journal Emergency Medicine: Integrating Emergency Care with Population Health, is one of only two fully open-access, Medline indexed, emergency medicine journals in the world. The journal is sponsored by more than 60 academic departments of EM, and is the official journal of the California chapters of AAEM and ACEP, and the national American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians.
The Department of Emergency Medicine prides itself on being at the forefront of medical education. The monthly conferences utilize active learning principles to ensure engaging and effective didactics. Additionally, the department publishes the Journal of Education and Teaching in Emergency Medicine (JETem). JETem is an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal-repositiory for EM educators. JETem publishes ready-to-use didactics and accepts submissions of team-based learning, small group learning, simulation, podcasts, lectures, innovations, curricula, and submissions to our image bank. We believe it is important to allow educators to advance through the scholarship of their educational work. JETem gives educators the opportunity to publish and distribute outstanding, scholarly academic work so that it may be widely distributed, thereby increasing the significance of their results.
