Front Office Sports is currently in search of a dynamic West Coast News Editor to play a pivotal role in shaping and executing our editorial content. Collaborating closely with the editor-in-chief and the directors of news and features, you’ll have a key hand in articulating and amplifying FOS’s mission of delivering timely and relevant news.
As the news editor, you’ll report to the news director and together take a hands-on approach in ensuring that our team remains aligned with our overarching goals and objectives. We’re looking for someone who thrives in a collaborative work environment and possesses exceptional communication, feedback, and multitasking abilities. Your leadership will be instrumental in guiding a diverse group of journalists with varying levels of experience toward achieving excellence in our editorial output.
Key Responsibilities
- Along with the news director, steer a stable of news reporters: Assign and assist in storyfinding; lay out a clear vision; and provide feedback and guidance on filed copy—all with a mind for pace and timeliness.
- Edit, produce, and write a slate of daily news stories across FOS to newsletter, podcast, and social teams.
- Uphold a high standard of cleanliness and accuracy in copy.
- Craft snappy/clever/grabbing/impactful headlines alongside SEO-friendly versions for backend optimization.
- Work with FOS’s news director to establish a system for handling morning, evening, and weekend coverage when major news breaks.
- Maintain an event schedule for coverage of key editorial sports tentpoles.
- Occasionally provide backup on feature and newsletter editing/production to accommodate PTO and vacations on a lean editorial staff.
- Collaborate with the news director and sales team to develop marketable franchises that align with FOS editorial goals.
- Contribute, along with other editors, to the maintenance of FOS’s homepage—cycling out a centerpiece, eye for repetition, etc.
- Communicate with Wheelhouse (back-end developer) as needed on WordPress tweaks and troubleshooting.
- Stay up to date on industry headlines and throughlines for the sake of driving FOS news coverage.
- Manage FOS’s news push alerts through Pushly.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Based in the West Coast, with the expectation of working into what will be later East Coast hours, sometimes editing and writing off of late news.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in journalism, preferably with experience in business and sports news.
- Proven editorial leadership and management track record, including overseeing a team of journalists.
- Strong understanding of the sports business landscape, trends, and audience preferences.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
- Capable of assuming a player/coach role, readily contributing as needed across various tasks and responsibilities.
- Demonstrated proficiency in communication, leadership, feedback delivery, and multitasking abilities.
- Dedicated to crafting compelling and shareable storytelling content.
- Possess a deep understanding and enthusiasm for the sports business landscape.
- Ability to tap into a network of freelancers and contributors for diverse content creation needs.
