A Brief Overview
The Newborn Screening Technician is responsible for the appropriate hearing screening, PKU screening, transcutaneous bilirubin screening and documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR). Accountable for screening techniques in accordance with all sanitation regulations and standards established by regulating agencies and the medical center, including all policies and procedures.
What you will do
- Screens all newborn babies for hearing prior to discharge and documents via electronic medical record (EMR). Clarifies orders with the patient care team as necessary.
- Notifies nursing staff, the attending physician, Neonatologist of hearing screening results, educational needs, outpatient appointments and any other pertinent information.
- Collects and reports hearing screening results, patient logs, and any additional information as required by hospital policy and state guidelines.
- Completes data entry, maintains equipment, order supplies and paperwork related to the newborn hearing-screening program. Assists in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
- Obtains PKU screening utilizing appropriate testing paper. PKUs are collected, documented, and prepared for transport each day.
- Performs documentation in accordance with policies and procedures and in compliance with federal, state, and local health regulations. * Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes. * Maintains patient medical records and logs. * Utilizes computer systems to enter and retrieve data.
- Adheres to established departmental and organizational policies, compliance/quality improvement, safety environment and infection control standards. Provides coverage for relief and absences as required covering various shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma GED equivalent Required
- At least 1 year experience Blood collection/phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting. Required
- Experience in PKU screening and other lab screening Preferred
