Southworth, located in Falmouth, Maine, has an immediate opening for a New Product Design Engineer.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Engineer and design new products and/or modifications to existing products from a set of written specifications and following established professional practices and procedures for design engineering.
- Creating detailed design drawings, specifications, and prototypes using computer-aided design (3-D CAD) software and other design tools.
- Able to optimize use of SolidWorks (CAD) to minimize errors and interferences in design, and to control costs.
- Establish and maintain company mechanical, electrical and hydraulic design standards and policies.
- Control product costs through design considerations for lowest cost materials and DFM approaches.
- Perform complex design calculations to insure proper function and safety of specialized machinery.
- Assist Sales by providing technical expertise, including direct customer contact and customer visits, as required.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Purchasing and Sales to achieve business deliverables and provide expertise on product design.
- Collaborate with other Engineers and provide peer mentorship as appropriate to develop overall knowledge base within the team.
- Provide Quality and Customer Service support, as applicable; including site visits to evaluate and resolve problems.
- Support Manufacturing with site visits, challenges on the production floor during assembly, and timely completion of ECRs.
- Support Purchasing with issues arising from part obsolescence, part substitutions and annual cost reduction initiatives.
- Develop and write comprehensive and relevant testing requirements.
- Ensure design compliance to applicable specifications, codes, and established safety requirements.
- Generating documentation, reports, and presentations to communicate design concepts, progress, and findings to stakeholders.
- Provide consulting support to others within the Design Engineering group to ensure efficient utilization of the existing design base.
- Participate regularly in process improvement projects.
- May be asked to perform inspection and testing on manufactured machines as part of product development or analysis, as well as failure analysis if needed.
- Perform other duties and complete other projects as may be assigned or requested.
Non-negotiable Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Minimum 5 years of relevant New Product Development experience.
- 5+ years SolidWorks (CAD)
- Experience drafting parts and assemblies using industry standard techniques and GD&T
- Thorough understanding and ability to perform calculations of Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, and Machine Design
- Thorough knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic power systems
- Thorough knowledge of electro-mechanical systems
- Thorough knowledge of fabricated steel weldments
- Experience with sheet metal and CNC cutting and forming
- Experience using FEA to evaluate design integrity.
- Able to work effectively and accurately against deadlines and time constraints.
- Ability to self-manage for several weeks at a time.
- Ability to describe technical concepts to laypeople.
- Ability to communicate openly and effectively with others
- Creative problem-solving skills with regards to machine design
- Continuous process improvement (e.g. Lean Six Sigma)
- Ability to manage and balance time effectively
Education:
- BS, in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
Desired Skills
- Windows and CAD management system (SolidWorks PDM) proficiency
- Experience with electrical controls and power.
- Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams and schematics.
- Ability to read hydraulic arrangements and schematics.
- Ability to identify a need, identify how to solve for it, and be able to transpose into a workable specification.
- Design for Manufacturability experience.

Travel Requirements:
Occasional travel to our factories or to customers’ sites may be required (25%)
