Position Overview:
- Under general direction, performs a wide variety of professional and technical duties related to the implementation, configuration, administration, monitoring, and support of the information technology infrastructure including the wide area, local area, and storage area networks, physical and virtual server systems, Windows server infrastructure services, and infrastructure management software.
- Provides tier III technical support and guidance to end-users and Information Technology Division staff.
- Serves as primary interface between users and vendors regarding technical issues.
- Supports the technology procurement process. performs related work as required.
Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, vendors, other public agencies, and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Provide systems support for the city's network and server infrastructure, including analysis, diagnosis, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Design, develop, test, implement, troubleshoot, monitor, and maintain LAN and WLAN network, server systems and wireless equipment to measure performance, identify deviations from existing service levels and implement timely solutions to issues adversely affecting network performance and systems.
- Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot data center network infrastructure. develop cabling plans and hardware specifications for changes and updates to the citywide network.
- Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot virtual infrastructure systems.
- Plan, implement, maintain, and monitor data center changes for environmental, physical, and power systems.
- Plan and implement power, network, and racking solutions for technology equipment.
- Monitor server logs and performance data and configures servers and networks to maximize performance.
- Administer server and network monitoring and response system.
- Prepare and maintain system procedures and documentation. monitor assigned systems and resources and maintain and administer security systems and methodologies.
- Analyze and solve operating problems.
- Make system modifications as necessary. evaluate and make recommendations regarding requests from departments related to technology systems.
- Provide technical support, and training for IT staff and other users.
- Perform statistical analysis to troubleshoot enterprise-level issues.
- Implement, maintain, and troubleshoot all DNS and DHCP servers.
- Prepare clear and concise program documentation, user procedures, and instructions.
- Document new and existing systems and coordinate system development activities with others.
- Troubleshoot issues with existing or developed systems. work with the appropriate resources to resolve them.
- Develop and maintain technical expertise in assigned areas including awareness of current hardware, software, laws, rules, and regulations.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of:
- Principals and current trends in information technology design and implementation.
- Microsoft Server Operating Systems, Cisco Network Operating and Management Systems, and network Operating Systems.
- Network routing and switching protocols.
- Virtual private networking systems.
- Storage Area Networks, Network Attached Storage, and network file systems.
- Microsoft Active Directory.
- Infrastructure services including Domain Authentication, DNS, WINS, DHCP, Distributed File System, VSS, and KMS.
- Web servers and traffic analysis.
- FTP servers.
- Microsoft Exchange servers and SPAM firewalls.
- Internet monitoring, filtering and reporting.
- Principles and practices of project management.
- Preparing clear and concise standard operating procedures and system documentation, reports of work performed, and other written materials.
- Virtualization technologies including VMWare, IEEE 802.11 / Wi-Fi standards, technologies, tools, and signal analysis.
- Networking protocols, services and concepts, including, but not limited to, TCP / IP, HTTP.
- HTTPS, SSH, SNMP, FTP, TFTP, BGP, OSPF, HSRP, STP, VLANs, sub-netting and the OSI model.
- Administration of Layer 2 and 3 network switches including management of interface speed / duplex, flow control, and frame size, and configuring and managing VLANs, trunks, and Spanning Tree Protocol.
- Network monitoring tools and techniques used to perform troubleshooting including packet capture and protocol analysis tools.
- Various operating systems including iOS, Cisco IOS XE and Cisco NX-OS.
- Principles and practices of security (firewalls) and maintenance.
- Principles and practices of virtualization technologies and various operating systems.
- Principles and practices of data communications, data center architecture, UPS design and maintenance and environmental design and monitoring.
- Ability to:
- Prepare clear and concise program documentation, user procedures, reports of work performed, and other written materials.
- Exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, practices, policies, procedures, and work standards.
- Analyze, interpret, apply and enforce federal, state and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
- Understand, interpret, and successfully communicate both orally and in writing pertinent department policies and procedures.
- Utilize discretion in the handling and disclosure of confidential information.
- Learn the functions of various city departments and divisions.
- Organize, prioritize work, and meet critical time deadlines.
- Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines.
- Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone and in writing.
- Establish, maintain, and foster effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Install and perform routine maintenance on various network equipment.
- Automate network drive mappings, printer installation, time synchronization, application installation.
- Troubleshoot complex technical problems.
- Develop and implement complex technical solutions on multiple hardware and software platforms.
- Communicate effectively and explain software usage to computer users of all skill levels.
- Respond appropriately, effectively, and promptly to the needs of internal and external customers using principles of good customer service.
- Train and instruct others in work procedures.
- Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
- A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is: Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data or Information Processing, Information / Networking Systems or closely-related field, preferred.
- Four years of increasingly responsible experience in the areas of computer science, data or information processing or a closely related field.
