Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Quality Manager, this position is responsible for supporting, guiding, and assisting the Production Department daily in all NDT needs to sustain Howmet and industry quality standards, while complying with NADCAP regulations and customer specifications. The incumbent communicates continually with Level II Inspectors, Engineering Department personnel, and hourly staff in the Ultrasonic and Penetrant Inspection Departments to ensure compliance to applicable quality system standards and customer requirements. Externally, they communicate with customers.
Accountability Objectives
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Calibrating production equipment, used by hourly inspection employees within the Sonic and Penetrant Departments, to ensure compliance.
• Revising and updating all work instructions for hourly inspection employees regarding pre-inspection etch, sonic, penetrant, and stamp control in accordance with customer requirements.
• Interfacing with customers and suppliers through emails and phone calls to develop NDT strategies and solutions that meet customer specifications and company quality requirements. This also includes visiting customer and supplier premises, as well as providing equipment demonstrations to customer representatives at Cleveland Operations.
• Initiating training and development programs for all Ultrasonic and Penetrant hourly inspectors to support product and process quality requirements. This includes providing training on various customer-driven testing methods, qualifying, and certifying all Level II inspectors.
• Writing forging-specific scan plans and departmental procedures for the inspection of each part performed by the Ultrasonic and Penetrant departments that meet the intent of customer contracts.
• Creating POs for necessary equipment and contracted services. Distributing supplies and equipment to the Production Department by maintaining minimum and maximum inventory values.
• Conducting internal process audits on machine operating cells, tool calibrations, employees, etc. This includes the preparation of audit reports, initiation of associated corrective actions, and maintenance of applicable audit action items and records to maintain Howmet certifications and comply with external auditors and/or customers.
• Using and applying root cause corrective action tools for the evaluation of non-conformances, which includes investigating, evaluating, reviewing, reporting, responding to customers, and internal follow-up activities.
• Performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
For this position to be successful, the incumbent should have:
- High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 4 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Minimum 3 years of demonstrated experience with defect recognition, NDT, and inspection for aerospace parts.
- NDT Level I/II certification or applicable hours and the ability to test into a Level III certification within a 12-month
period from the start of the position.
- This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which requires U.S. person status. ITAR
defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Preferred Qualifications
For this position to be successful, preference is given to candidates with:
- ASNT NDT Level III certificate holder in ultrasonic and/or liquid penetrant testing methods
- A Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum one year of experience working with product function, testing, design, continuous improvement, and process
control tools including SPC, MSA, Control Plans, Gage R & R's, and other statistical techniques.
- Thorough understanding of ISO/AS9100 quality systems standards and NADCAP special processes.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Root Cause and Corrective Action and auditing methodology.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or
governmental regulations.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and
solid geometry and trigonometry.
- Working knowledge of CAD, Oracle, and Unix.
- Previous experience in a unionized environment.
Working Conditions
This position involves a moderate exposure to risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Work is normally
performed in a shared work environment, divided between the shop floor and an interior work space. While not exposed to
hazardous materials, this position requires wearing full PPE to protect from mobile equipment, hot materials, dirt, dust, fumes,
smoke, and loud noises.
This position also requires light physical activity, such as walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time, as well as
occasionally engaging in all motions necessary to inspect equipment, which may entail some lifting.
This position also requires a willingness to travel both nationally and internationally, as required by the customer.
