Job Summary: The Manager, National Food Sourcing will be responsible for securing fresh produce, zero cost donations from farmers, wholesalers, retailers and importers, and distributing this surplus to food banks and agencies throughout the region. As a secondary focus, this person can also source shelf-stable donations. This role involves building and maintaining relationships with donors, ensuring quality standards, and supporting operational objectives to efficiently maximize fresh produce donations sourced and distributed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Secure fresh donated produce through professional and tactful relationship building with current and potential donors.
- Work with the SE distribution team to assist in coordinating local and regional transportation and delivery to the non-profit organizations we serve such as food banks, food pantries, churches, etc.
- Grow the number of food donors across the country with a focus on key growing regions, distribution centers, and ports of entry where large volumes of donations will be available.
- Conduct phone calls, face-to-face visits, and other meetings with current and prospective donors to educate them on the SE mission and process.
- Ensure quality through the process and educate donors on product distribution requirements related to quality, aging, pack sizes, etc.
- Build and maintain collaborative and mutually respectful relationships with other local, regional or national food rescue organizations doing the same work.
- Build relationships with state or regional fresh produce and/or related food industry organizations and attend state association/food industry events including trade shows, association meetings, and network conferences.
- As time permits, develop relationships with brokers, distributors, retail sites, carriers, 3PLs, and manufacturers to build awareness and potentially secure additional produce and shelf-stable donations.
- Track and report on donations by donor, commodities and other KPI metrics.
- Provide professional, responsive, and appreciative customer service to all food industry partners, donors, and co-workers.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the fresh produce industry with a preference for:
- Commodity sourcing/growing in potatoes, onions, apples, etc.
- Produce terminal market experience
- Produce wholesale experience
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
- Charitable food rescue or program experience (preferred)
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to travel as needed to be successful in building relationships
- Must have a valid driver’s license to visit with growers and other organizations and be able to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a sense of urgency
- Committed to the mission of food waste and fighting hunger.
