JOB TITLE: MOTOR EQUIPMENT REPAIRPERSON
DEPARTMENT: POLICE DEPARTMENT
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FULLTIME/NON-EXEMPT
UNION/NON-UNION: SUPERVISORY AND PROFESSIONAL UNION
The Motor Equipment Repairperson plays a critical role in maintaining the functionality and safety of the Police Department's fleet of vehicles and equipment. They shall perform skilled work in maintaining, servicing, and repairing a variety of automotive vehicles and motorized equipment utilized by the Police Department. This role ensures all vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently, supporting the department's critical operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect and troubleshoot gasoline and diesel engine-powered vehicles and equipment, including hydraulic systems and generators.
Perform repairs such as:
Engine tune-ups and overhauls
Electrical system repairs
Brake system adjustments and replacements
Front-end alignments
Replacement or repair of engine components, valves, and related systems
Welding, fabrication, and painting of vehicle body panels and parts.
- Conduct preventive maintenance, including lubrication, oil and filter changes, and coolant system checks.
- Fabricate and modify equipment to meet specific operational needs (e.g., installing brackets or racks).
- Test-drive vehicles and equipment to diagnose issues and verify completed repairs.
- Order parts and maintain communication with auto and parts dealers.
- Maintain detailed service records, ensuring accuracy and compliance with safety regulations.
- Perform periodic safety inspections and testing of vehicles and equipment.
- Replace and maintain tires, brakes, and other essential components as required.
- Execute other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license, Class D.
- Two (2) – three (3) years’ experience involving the repair and maintenance of automotive engines and other vehicles or equipment components
- Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment and techniques used in automotive and equipment repair.
- Required to complete ongoing education/schooling to obtain and maintain any educational credentialing needed for position.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in all situations, and work well under pressure.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbent must maintain and provide a complete set of heavy-duty tools sufficient for performing routine engine repairs. The role involves exposure to chemicals such as oils, fluids, paints, and antifreeze. Work may be performed in various conditions, including confined spaces and outdoors, depending on repair needs. The incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to chest height; Ability to utilize all machines, devices, tools used in motor equipment repair work; Physical agility to maneuver under, over, and around vehicles during repair; Capacity to work with hazardous materials, including oils, gases, paints, and thinners, in compliance with safety standards.
HOURS
Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
6:30AM – 3:00PM
SALARY
Starting rate $23.76 - $25.09
Annual increases up to $32.91 per hour
